About me
I’m an LTA level 3 (soon to be 4) coach with 25 years coaching experience. I coach because I love the game and love what it can do for people. I also love the interactions and connections tennis coaching brings.
I truly believe that, while the best time to start may have been many years ago, the second best time is now - and it’s NEVER too late.
My coaching style is very player dependent and I try to understand what works for you. As a rule, every session should do three things: 1. Be fun, 2. Be enlightening/improve your game and 3. Get your heart rate up/make you feel like you had a workout. If I fail to tick these boxes, call me out please! The learning curve for tennis isn’t linear, but the plan is always focussed to make you feel better about your game in the short and long term. During our sessions I’ll mix in basket drills, rally based learning and game based learning - I’ll often use the camera for video coaching as seeing what you’re doing often unlocks feeling what you’re doing.
Through the last 25 years of coaching I’ve coached at some amazing places and for some amazing people. I was Richard Branson’s personal coach on Necker Island, BVI for 2 years, I was a private coach in Moscow, Russia for 2 years. Until interrupted by covid, I was National Coach to the Trinidad and Tobago national squads, working with Kyle Hannays and his team. In the UK I have been head of juniors at Esporta Oxford and the same role at the Bank of England Sports club. I also helped Anabel Croft launch her junior program at the National Tennis Centre where I coached for 18 months.
I’ve taken juniors from their first lessons to school first teams and even Division 1 college squads. I’ve coached a player on the Futures (and occasional Challenger) circuit, plus many juniors at county level. But honestly, I get just as much satisfaction—maybe more—from teaching adults who missed tennis in their youth. Seeing them start playing socially, for life, is incredibly rewarding. The idea that kids learn quicker? In my opinion, a myth (and also the opinion of Staels, E., & Van den Broeck, W. in their 2018 study into motor learning)
I can still hit a ball well enough (and plan to play more than my usual one tournament a year!) and when we’re on court I’ll probably run around just as much as you!
Additionally, I’m very happy to be a Tecnifibre ambassador.
