Come and play tennis in Ramsey
Tue, 01 Mar 2022 00:00
Apparently John Lennon said “life is what happens while you are busy making other plans” and my oh my! that sort of sums up the last year at Ramsey Tennis Club.
Will people come back to play in a post covid environment? How are we going to grow the membership of the club? Will there be opportunities to play competitive tennis? How can we move forward when there’s been so much difficulty?
And while we’ve been thinking about all of those things let me tell you what’s actually happened – here’s some highlights:
- Membership grew to well over 50 (that’s about a 25% increase)
- Astro grass courts refurbished and back in action with new nets.
- Hard courts deep cleaned and moss removed.
- Club house interior fitted out and vastly improved.
- Full ladies and men’s league tennis
- Great turnout on Monday club nights throughout
And it just all seemed to happen – not by itself, but given the difficult times we can say that as a club we’ve grown, invested and yes, we’ve even prospered!
But the work continues and with the start of the new season approaching we’re looking forward to a much more “normal” year in terms of social and competitive tennis. The committee are looking at ways to grow the club so that we can offer more and wider opportunities and there are a number of initiatives in hand. One major focus for the long term is the fundraising required to completely replace the astro grass courts in the next 4 years or so.
The social highlight of the year was undoubtedly the Viva Abba! evening which proved to be a very popular pre Christmas party. Not only was it legal (!), but we had loads of people from within the club, from the town and from other towns around and about and it was just a great evening with a great band and raised some much needed funds. Further events are planned including a quiz night – keep up to date with what’s going on by following us on our Facebook page.
We are a friendly club and that has been shown by the popularity of the Monday club nights all the way through the winter with a really good turnout and just an attitude of wanting to join with others in playing some casual tennis and having a chat and a laugh.
The new season starts from 01 April and we are looking forward to a full programme of social and competitive tennis and some social events to go alongside. Membership remains cheap and new members get the first year half price anyway plus children can join for as little as a tenner! Please get in touch with us if you have any queries at all, we’d love to chat it through with you.
Finally, I want to put a call out to past members of the club – you know who you are! Why not come back and rejoin us (along with your families) and be a part of this latest phase in the club’s development.
Hope to see you all on the courts in the coming months.
