Padel Tennis Court Funding Secured

The directors of Clwb Chwaraeon Rhosneigr / Rhosneigr Sports Club (RSC) are delighted to announce that their bid for match funding from the Welsh Government to build an outdoor padel tennis court at the club has been successful. With planning permission already in place, the directors are now liaising further with potential contractors and local partners, and they’re confident that the build will be completed in the next 12 months.

The padel court is a flagship project for the club and big news for the village and wider community.

Padel tennis is a super-fun racket sport which can be played by the whole family. It is played over a net on an enclosed court that's about 1/3 the size of a regular tennis court. The scoring system and balls are similar to tennis and it's usually played in the doubles format. However, padel racquets are solid with shorter shafts, and the ball can be played off the back and side walls. For these reasons, padel is sometimes described as a cross between tennis and squash. However, that’s where the similarities end. Padel is (quite literally) a whole new ball game - and it’s booming!

After months of work on the padel tennis project, RSC’ s chairman Derek Browne reacted with delight to news of the funding. He said, “I’m absolutely thrilled. It’s brilliant news. Our padel court will be be the first one on Anglesey and I am confident it will attract players from far and wide. A big investment like this, is an investment in the health and wellbeing of the island. We may need to do a bit of extra fund-raising, but it’s definitely going to happen. Padel tennis will be an exciting addition to the sports we already offer (tennis, walking tennis, football, walking football, basketball, croquet and bowling). Having a padel court will bring people to the area all year round and this will benefit the local economy. If there are any local organisations, business people, groups, individuals and sports players out there who would like to get involved, we’d be keen to hear from them”.
