Padel Tennis Court Construction Has Begun

Padel Tennis is a relatively new racket sport that’s played over a net on an enclosed court. The court is about 1/3 the size of a regular tennis court. The rackets are more like bats, and the balls are slower, but similar to tennis balls. Padel is sometimes described as a cross between tennis and squash. It’s much more accessible though - sociable, easy to learn, fun to play and suitable for players of all ages and abilities. There’s something highly addictive about it too, so the sport is booming. The LTA (who ought to know) even assert that it’s “the fastest growing sport in the world”. Padel’s bourgeoning popularity means that courts are rapidly being built all over the UK. However, there isn’t one on Anglesey - yet! The nearest one to us is in Caernarfon. It only opened in March but people travel miles to play there and it’s almost always booked-up.

Unsurprisingly then, we’ve been inundated with enquiries and we’re confident that when our new court opens it will be a major attraction and we’re expecting an influx of new players and members from across the island and further afield.

Of course, to build a court from scratch is expensive. Especially here, because it will have to withstand our harsh coastal environment. The good news though, is we’ve already secured all the funding we need to get it built. That’s £65k match funding from the Welsh Government and £35k of our own money to cover all the necessary drainage, groundworks, court construction, specialist glass, fencing and ‘first-fix’ type electrical work.

After three years of planning and preparation, things are now moving fast - the groundworks began on Monday 16th June. Our padel court is about to become a reality.
