Centenary Day
Mon, 09 Sep 2024 00:00
Our Centenary Day on Saturday 7th September was a great success, despite the constant threat of inclement weather. Present and past members, families and friends joined us to celebrate 100 years of Seaford and Blatchington Tennis Club, including 93 year old Shirley Wallace who joined the club in 1952!
We were privileged to have our Lewes MP, the RH James MacCleary open our new artificial clay courts, which were installed at the end of 2023. (see photographs below)
There followed an exciting team tournament with 32 players facing off in singles and doubles, heroically organised by our captain of tennis Matt Bellingham, and despite some hiccups on who was playing who and where, a winning team was declared.
Thanks to our dedicated volunteers behind the bar, the Pimms, beer and wine was flowing, and strawberries were enjoyed.
Excellent burgers, sausages, salads and vegan alternatives were prepared at the club by the lovely professional team from La Maison Restaurant
Shirley Wallace cut the magnificent tennis court centenery cake complete with racqets and balls, which was served :) to everyone.
Old wooden racqets tennis was attempted with players commenting on sore wrists and difficulty timing the ball, but it was great fun. There was also some outstanding old tennis attire on display.
The event closed with the presentation of trophies to the worthy winners and runners-up of our club championships.
Thanks go to our compere chairman Clive Sparks, and the hard work by the committee and volunteers on preparation beforehand and on the day itself, making it a great day to remember.
