Tips to Improve your Serve

" The fifth set is not about tennis, is about nerves. -" Boris Becker"-
Having a good and accurate serve could be crucial to decide the result of a match.
Next time you double fault just relax and think of these easy and simple tips to improve it.
Do not forget the importance of the mental game. Try to enjoy the match and minimize mistakes, most times the winner is the player who makes the least mistakes.

Then you need to know what kind of player you are or what kind of strategy you will apply for a specific match.
Some players prefer an attacking strategy whilst others are more defensive. This will help you to decide what kind of serve you want.
Having a good serve will help you putting your opponent on the back foot from the start.
It will put extreme pressure on them to perform well on returns, hence forcing them to take more risks and usually this leads to more errors.
In doubles, a quality serve is crucial to achieve the tactics agreed with your partner, maximising your chances to win points on your serve.

  • The ball toss should be just in front of your body. Slight adjustment might be needed depending on whether you want to hit a kick or slice serve.
  • To increase the chance of the tennis serve clearing the net, never hit the ball at a low point. Make contact with the ball as high as possible.
  • To guarantee a higher tennis serve speed, you should extend forward first and then bring the racket head down on the opposite side of the body as you land inside the court.
  •  Always have a target in mind and just don't aim at the service box (this goes for your social tennis to your county tournaments)
  •  Never-ever think you are going to double-fault after missing your first serve ( you will get what you think of). Instead, just think where you are going to serve as you do with your first serves.

Do not forget we do our popular tennis drills for all levels every week. Every class we focus on a specific shot.

Thanks and see you all on the courts soon.

Sebastien.
