Padel Playing Guide

01 Beginner

I have either never played padel before or I am an inexperienced player who has received little or no coaching. I can play a short, slow-paced, gentle rally but need to improve my consistency. I can play a simple flat volley with little control and would rather let the ball bounce than play an overhead. I have little or no tactical knowledge of the game and make lots of unforced errors.

02 Beginner / Improver

I used to play or am starting to play more regularly but I am rusty. I can rally but struggle with accuracy and control. Playing with single glass is a challenge. I can hit a volley with some control of the pace and direction of the ball. I can hit a smash but have a limited understanding of a bandeja. My lob is a working progress, but I understand the importance of the shot to transition from defence to attack. I attempt to serve and volley. I can score a game but have little match experience.

03 Improver

I have some experience of padel match play, understand basic court positioning, tactics and am comfortable scoring. My groundstrokes are reasonably consistent with accuracy and control. I can defend from single glass but struggle with double glass. I can hit a bandeja but with little consistency. I am comfortable hitting a flat smash. I always serve and volley but often get caught in ‘no man’s land’. I have started to apply some slice to my serve, groundstrokes and volleys but with little accuracy and control. I am starting to construct points with lobs and transitions to the net.

04 Improver / Intermediate

I am a reasonable all-round player and play regularly. I am tactically astute and am comfortable playing competitive padel. I can apply slice to my serve and am able to direct it to either side of the service box. My groundstrokes are consistent, and I can hit them flat or with slice accurately. I frequently use a bandeja and have started to apply topspin to my smash. I can hit a flat and slice volley with control and accuracy. I can defend single and double glass. My transition to and from the net is seamless and I always attempt to maintain the net position. I can identify my opponent’s strengths and weaknesses, but I am not always able to adjust and take advantage of this.

05 Intermediate

I am an experienced club player, frequently play in team padel and have started to enter tournaments. I can play a faster more intense game, play a chiquita and use the angles on the court. I can play my volley deep and low in the court. I can hit a drop shot but it is not as effective as it could be. I can competently hit a bandeja and smash. I am working on my vibora and topspin smash. I can hit an effective lob deep in the court. I can adjust my court position based on my partner’s position. I always serve and volley with a high level of success. I can attack and defend comfortably.

06 Intermediate / Advance

I play an advanced level of club padel and would describe myself as an experienced tournament player. I make few unforced errors and can play a variety of shots with consistency, accuracy and control. I can cope with long, intense rallies and matches. I can hit an effective angle, drop shot, chiquita, bandeja, vibora, gancho and rulo. I have no problems defending single and double glass regardless of the spin. I can dictate points and get out of challenging situations.

07 Advanced

I play padel to county or national standard.
