Court Etiquette

SISSINGHURST TENNIS CLUB

COURT ETIQUETTE

Please try to follow our Court Etiquette guide at all times to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable playing experience at our club

  • Please be respectful and courteous by talking quietly if you are next to courts being used

  • Do not walk behind a court during an active point. You can pass quickly once the point has finished

  • During a game/match, please ensure that the Server has 2 balls before the point is played in order to minimise disruption during play

  • To keep matches flowing, try to avoid passing balls back to the server between 1st & 2nd Serves as it disrupts play. If a ball is in the way you can move it but try to remember that you must try to play at the speed of the Server

  • Quite often, a ball from the other court will end up on your court. To return the ball, always try to roll it to the back of the court unless a player asks for it directly.

  • If your ball goes onto the other court, please wait until the point/rally is finished before trying to retrieve it / ask for it back. Please DO NOT walk across the back of the other court whilst play is in progress

  • LINE CALLS: Often these can be hard to see from the opposite end/side of the court so you must call your own lines. To clarify, any ball that touches any part of the line is in so there is no need to call. You are permitted to call ‘yes’. If your opponent does not call ‘out’ then play must continue

  • The server should keep the score and call it out at the start of each point

  • If in any doubt whether your opponents shot was in or out, call it in. If both you and your opponent disagree, you can offer to play a let in order to replay the point rather than continuing to argue the score. Always replay the point starting with a First serve

  • Do not criticise your partner or opponent and always try to offer positive encouragement. This ensures a positive and enjoyable playing experience for everyone playing at our club
