Avon Winter League - First Match

Match report
We played our first match of the mixed winter league on Sunday 2nd November. Our team consisted of Greig, Rich Morley, Tracey and Kelly against Westbury Park at home. All four rubbers were extremely tight affairs!!
Our ladies were edged out 7-5 6-4 with some very solid net play from the visitors.   Plenty of good rallies giving a couple of visiting spectators a proper show.
The men’s doubles was a very to and fro match.  Rallying from 4-1 down in the opening set we took 5 consecutive games including a couple of outrageous lobs from Rich.   The 2nd set however after going down again couldn’t quite be retrieved so a championship tie break was needed.   Perhaps our experience in a similar situation in our match during the club champs helped as we assumed early control and with a couple of down the line stunners from Greig held on for a well earned W!
On to the mixed rubbers and Rich and Kelly teamed up as the A pairing….  A decision that seemed a mistake finding ourselves 6-0 2-0 down in no time at all!   However after a little stern talking to ourselves we managed to wrestle the initiative and claimed the 2nd 6-4 with a combination of attacking play and a refusal to go down without a fight!   Alas the tiebreak wasn’t to be…. The opposition finding some unplayable winners to reel off 5 unanswered points.
A similar story for Greig and Tracey, losing the first set 6-1 and finding themselves 4-1 down in the 2nd. But the never say die attitude helped them reel off 5 consecutive games to force yet another championship tiebreak.   Plenty of tooing and froing to be had but the visitors hung on for a 11-9 win….   Overall 8-2 loss for the team but but for a couple of points could have so easily been the other way around.     Let’s hope the rest of the season is as much fun but with a slightly different outcome!!
