Did you know?

Herbert Lawford was a Wimbledon champion and many-times runner-up in the 1880s.

Born in London, he was later educated in Edinburgh at school and University.   He lived in retirement in Dess on Deeside and is said to have been a member of Aboyne Curling Club.  We can imagine he visited Tarland for a curling match.   He died in 1925 and was buried at St Thomas's Church in Aboyne soon after.

He is featured in the "Tennis Hall of Fame"and is said to have been the first player to develop the forehand topspin stroke, allegedly using what is now called the "Western" (US Coast) racquet grip.

If you want to try to imagine what the Western grip/ forehand stroke feels like, hold the racquet handle with a "handshake" grip.   Your index finger knuckle is on the top (wide) bevel of the handle, lined up with the racquet frame.

Now extend your arm horizontally out to your forehand side   Twist your hand clockwise/backwards so that your palm is facing upwards. Imagine hitting the ball from below with what you thought was the "back" face of the racquet.

Extreme sport!   Don't try this at home: leave it to Rafa.
