Well done to the Girls who achieved promotion from Group 4 and the Boys who stayed in Group 6.
U18 Girls County Cup
Captain: Kathryn Rymer
Assistant: Ellie Scarff
I was very confident going into the weekend. I felt we had a strong team so was hoping for promotion. I’ve learnt though that matches can go either way and you just don’t know what could happen on the day. For me it wasn’t just about the promotion, it was about the experience, learning and taking something away from the weekend.
Throughout the weekend I saw support that the girls gave each other whether they lost or won, mental strength in matches. They talked to each other about tactics and what they could improve on.
Eleanor Scarff was a great support and was able to give her experiences to players.
U18 Boys County Cup
Captain: Martyn Lewis
Assistant: Joe Crocombe
Unfortunately are boys team have been stuck in the bottom division for a number of years now, but this year the team did considerably better with some good performances and close losses.
On day one we had a good start against the Isle of Man who unfortunately only had 4 players with them and it was the first time they had attended for a few years, we managed to beat them 9/0 giving all 7 of our players a match.
Day 2 saw us playing Oxfordshire who were a much stronger team only Aaron managed a singles win and Owen and Harry won a tight 3 set doubles at first pair, so a 7/2 loss.
Day 3 saw us play Somerset who had beaten Oxfordshire on the Friday and were looking very strong. Only Aaron managed a singles win, but both Will at 4 and Seb at 1 lost in tight 3 set matches so we went into the doubles 5/1 down when it could have so easily been 3 all. The doubles saw another good performance from Owen partnering Reuben they beat the number 2 pair in 3 sets. Seb and Aaron lost a tight match in 3 so we lost 7/2 but it could have quite easily have been a 5/4 win if things had gone our way.
The behaviour and team spirit was very good and there was some great support for the players on court especially on the last day when there some very vocal support in some of the tight matches. We had team practices on both Thursday and Friday nights and all the boys seem to have a good time. For Tom and Seb this is there last year in juniors so I hope they have enjoyed their experience in the teams. For Joe my assistant captain it was his first experience of 18’s County Cup and he was surprised by the standard of group 6 so a good experience for him hopefully for his onward journey in coaching.
So finally all the boys were picked up on time so a good weekend was had.
