News May 2026 – Tennis Club

There was plenty to report at the AGM in late March. Mike Purser, he of the Chair, ran through what has been an especially pleasing year for the club.

Tennis, both competitive and social, remains in good health. Regular events like CATS and RATs continue to thrive, and though the Wednesday evening social session struggled to attract participants we are going to give it another go this year. Our Open Day saw some new faces but, as seems to be the way with these things, only one new member came out of the day.

Our mixed doubles and the men's and ladies' doubles tournaments proved popular, with winners including Hazel and Nick Toombs in the mixed doubles, played to a new Tie Break Tens format which was great fun. The ABC League (starting very soon!) proves ever popular.

The club's performance in the Datchworth League was mixed, with the second team narrowly missing out on promotion. The Herts over-70s team faced stiff competition but performed admirably, securing second place in most matches.

Coaching has undergone changes, with Ross Alexander taking over as head coach and continuing to run adult and junior sessions, while Josh leads the junior coaching. New junior tennis camps were successfully introduced during the year.

The club makes strides in court maintenance, purchasing additional equipment to support volunteers who help maintain the courts. Indeed, it’s volunteers that help make the club what is today - part of the Tewin community. Maria Yanev, Ian Herbert, and Liz Reay have newly joined the committee and Peter Burgess has stepped down after 12 years of service.

And finally, we are financially on sound footing, with a healthy bank balance ready for when the next set of court maintenance and replacement falls due. Watch out for emails from the club secretary - there’s plenty afoot for 2026!
