Warwickshire Ladies County Week Report 2024

Lianne Candappa

London, Grand Drive

21 st – 26 th July 2024

Monday 22 nd July

V Bucks

The first day is always tough, getting familiar with the grass, your partner and on this occasion the
wind!
The girls worked so hard and Holly/Giorgie won 2 matches on cham tie breaks!
I think if we had of played Bucks later in the week we would have taken them, especially as their
captain left after day 3.

6-3 loss

Tuesday 23 rd July

V Lancs

We knew it was going to be a tough day when we saw they had Ella McDonald in the team, who
has represented GB in the fed cup team and also lost in 3 sets to Heather Watson last week!
We had 2 cham tie breaks and unfortunately lost these, although we lost 8-1 this doesn’t reflect
the scores, the matches were really tight.

Wednesday 24 th July

V Norfolk

We knew this was one we needed to win as they hadn’t beaten anyone else. It was the last day we
had Liz Massie before she was going off to a wedding and Kara was coming instead. Liz and Mary
had partnered well the last couple of days so we kept them together and Holly with Giorgie.
We beat Norfolk 7-2, with the losses on 2 cham tie breaks again!

7-2 win

Thursday 25 th July

V Kent

Again we knew this one was going to be tough with Kents results the rest of the week. We decided
to mix up the pairings, as Liz left Wednesday night and Kara was coming in. We knew this was
going to be tough to beat them but we wanted to get pairings sorted to take on Gloucestershire
tomorrow.
We knew the weather was against us today as well, so the referee decided to do fast 4 matches
from the start. Holly partnered with Lois and managed to win one on a cham tie break!
Unfortunately Holly pulled her stomach muscle at the start of this match so we decided to rest her
for tomorrow. We didn’t manage to finish all the matches before more rain came in, so had to
finish on Friday morning before taking on Gloucester, unfortunately losing 2 cham tie breaks.

8-1 loss

Friday 26 th July

V Gloucestershire

We got off to a great start going 2-1 up after round 1. Again it was fast 4 due to having to finish a
round from the night before. After round 2 it was 3-3 , after losing 2 very close cham tie breaks!
Giorgie and Mary having an amazing match against Alicia Barnett and her partner Sophie Brazell.
Alicia reached the quarter finals of the mixed doubles 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately we knew we
had to win 7-3 overall to stay up, so 3-3 wasn’t enough. That didn’t stop the girls from fighting and
Holly/Lois managed to beat Alicia and Sophie in 2 sets! Tnae and Bella battled hard but
unfortunately lost their match and so did Mary and Giorgie.

5-4 loss

Holly played great doubles through the week and got better by the day, even with a pulled
stomach muscle.
Giorgie from the back was solid, the rallies she was having from the back were unbelievable
especially against Alicia.
Mary’s hands at the net were up there with the top players from the other counties, often getting
shot of the day!
Liz would not let them win a point, she just kept fighting and fighting until she wore her
opponents out!
Lois’s forehand from the back was unbelievable, it just kept getting bigger shot by shot!
Tnae would often get free points off her serves and out hit the players from the back, finishing it
with a drop volley!
Bella had a great mixture of pace, and used her hands well at the net
Lucie was having amazing rallies from the back of the court, and mixed it up beautifully with some
fantastic lobs
Kara’s serve set up her and her partner with the kick it gave off, and the volley put aways!

It does mean we go down to Division 4 but it wasn’t through lack of fighting. The girls worked so
hard all week, they supported each other and made Warwickshire proud!

It was great to have Tom Barton’s support all week, it made a huge difference to the team!
