Warwickshire Ladies O65 Match Report

In spite of multiple disasters besetting the team we managed to field two pairs at Plymouth. Huge thanks to Sheila for helping out at the last moment and rearranging her weekend to enable us to get there. We stayed at the Moorland Hotel on the edge of the moor and hopefully the excellent dinner and breakfast we indulged in made it all worthwhile.

On to the tennis played on the carpet indoors at the Devonshire. Sheila Vaughan and Chris Clewer found first pair Anne Bulman and Josie Debnam too strong and took just one game. Meanwhile Caroline Rhodes and Alison Ker battled against Marilyn Garfitt and Julie Hopkinson, taking a fairly straightforward first set 6-2 before the opposition settled in and won the second 6-3. The close championship tie break went our way with some penetrating winners at 7-7.

In the reverse matches Caroline and Alison could only take three games. Chris and Sheila were coming good in their second set but couldn’t quite convert the essential points and lost 2-6, 3-6.

Under the circumstances we were pleased to come away with one rubber and another excellent meal provided by our very hospitable opponents.
