National champion Luca Pow returns to his roots to ace Warwickshire County Closed Championships

National Under 14 tennis champion Luca Pow from Solihull crowned an outstanding season by taking the top two junior titles at the Warwickshire County Closed Championships at Sutton Coldfield Tennis Club. Pow, 14, who also claimed the prestigious Road to Wimbledon Championship last month beat Charlie Watson to take the Under 18 county title in straight sets 6-3 6-2, then defeated Radu Manolescu to retain his Under 16s crown, a rerun of last year’s Under 14s final.  He also combined well with county teammate Daniel Agranovsky to take the Under 16 boys’ doubles title and with rising star Lucia Cassidy, 13, to squeak past Sam Parsons and Lois Porter in the Under 18 Mixed doubles final 10-7 in the deciding Championship tiebreak. Agranovsky from Rugby won the Under 14 singles  and doubles crowns, beating Ferran Redza from Warwick, who was unlucky also to lose the Under 12s final to Denis Ivanov

The powerful Richard Partridge, 25, from Coventry, the top seed, retained his Men’s singles crown outhitting Arran Trainor in straight sets. Trainor won the Under 18 doubles with Alex Griffiths.

The big-hitting Lucia Cassidy underlined her rapid improvement, winning the Under 18 singles title with a hard-fought victory over the consistent left-hander Sophie Smith from Sutton Coldfield, who gained a measure of consolation, beating Lois Porter in the Under 16 final. Porter from Balsall Common won the women’s championship, then teamed up with Cassidy to defeat Smith and Samantha Delleman from Rugby in the Under 16 girls’ doubles final.

Cadey Morgan, 12, from Oldbury continued her outstanding run of form, retaining the county Under 12 championship with a fluent victory over her talented county teammate Alice Wilson-Marsh. Morgan also won the Under 14 singles, to add to the Under 12 and Under 14 titles she won at the recent Open Junior Championship at the Edgbaston Priory Club where she trains on the prestigious performance squad. She has shown huge character to keep playing at a high level despite losing her father Steve in November, when Warwickshire LTA, Edgbaston Priory and many of her county teammates rallied round to provide grants and organise fund-raising initiatives to help cover her coaching and tournament costs.

The well-attended finals day and high-quality performances at all age-groups underlined the success of the new-look County Closed in only its second year at Sutton Coldfield Tennis Club.

“We’re thrilled with how the tournament went and its great atmosphere,” said organiser Bev Lancaster. “The club staged it superbly, everyone loved the social events and there was some brilliant, highly-competitive tennis. It was also good to see several of our nationally ranked juniors, particularly Luca Pow, taking the time to support their county tournament as it’s a real boost for our up-and-coming players to get the chance to play against people who are already competing on the international stage.  The social mixed doubles events once again attracted players of all standards, and it was lovely to see the youngsters playing with such enjoyment.”
