11&Under Boys County Cup Captains Report

Over this weekend Warwickshire’s 11&under boys team went and competed in County Cup qualifiers in Sheffield at Graves Leisure Centre with coaches Jordan (captain) and Ben (assistant). Day one we had to play all our singles facing the other 4 counties in our group. We started strong against Staffordshire with a strong 6-0 sweep, all of the boys played well following the game plan and tactics we had done in training leading up to the event. Next we played H&W and won 3-1 overall, our 5th player Barnabus did really well over coming his opponent. Then we went up against Yorkshire who got the better of us losing the tie 0-4 but the score did not reflect the tennis played and believe we played good attacking tennis but they were just a bit more consistent in the tight points. Final match of the day was up against Derbyshire and after a tough loss, all the boys stayed focused and mentally positive winning 4-0. Seb was excellent all day, keeping focus and battled in every match he had.

Day two and it was time for the doubles rubbers and a change of format. In the singles it was one set to 6 with sudden death deuce and in the doubles it went to two short sets to 4 with sudden death deuce, first up we played H&W with a 1-1 draw with some fantastic tennis from both teams. Second match was up against Yorkshire and we redeemed ourselves against them playing some excellent doubles, Aedan and Seb stepped up winning theirs 4-1, 3-4 (4-7), 10-4. Aedan served really and both beating the boys they lost to in the singles. Veer and Rehan lost in two tie breakers to even out the score to 1-1 but really showed great fight and attitude the whole time. The boys managed to bounce right back against Derbyshire and finally Staffordshire with back to back clean sweeps, Veer and Seb served well and looked confident going forward with some great volleys and smashes against Derbyshire. Aedan was very smart with finding the passing shots and being consistent in the rally against his opponents. Rehan was great and communicating with his partners and made some fantastic decisions in the point which were the difference in a few matches. Barnabus served really and pressured the pairs in the rally not allowing them time to move in and play. In the end we came 2nd and unfortunately did not quite qualify for the finals but overall I believe the boys looked great out there and played some quality tennis and did Warwickshire proud. The boys had enjoyed the whole weekend and had loads of fun.
