History
Widnes Tennis Club was first established in 1876 on Coroners Lane. It was called ‘Lane Tennis Club’ and was known as a small and friendly place to play tennis. It has evolved and thrived over the years, while always supporting the local community and being committed to helping as many people as possible access high quality tennis facilities.
🎾 1936: One of the first major improvements saw the 'New Clubhouse' being built on Coroners Lane which was equipped with the luxury of gas lighting.
🎾 1950: The Club enjoyed the addition of an extension to include a bar and toilet area. At this time the Club boasted two, and later, three red shale courts and four grass courts, although the grass courts were very rarely used due to the great British weather! The Club had a large membership and regularly attracted more than a hundred people on 'Gent’s Tea Day'. The Grass Courts were eventually sold to pay off the loan for the third shale court and so the size of the tennis club grounds was reduced.
🎾 1987: Three all-weather tarmac courts were installed to replace the red shale courts. Consequently, the membership increased rapidly and following a successful open day we had more than 120 members. The Club employed a new head coach, and it soon became clear that three courts could not sustain the ever-growing Junior membership, so we were faced with a dilemma.... There was only room for one more court on the Coroners Lane site. Although various attempts were made to increase the number of courts at the Club, they were rejected by the town planners, so the only option was to seek an alternative site.
🎾 2006: After much searching and planning, Halton BC offered us the possibility of relocating to a piece of land between St Peter and Paul Catholic High School and Widnes Golf Club. Our 20-year search for a new home was finally complete.
The new site offered everything we needed, and the result was the construction of what was then called Widnes Tennis Academy, a fabulous facility with a purpose-built clubhouse, three indoor courts and an affiliated gym attached. The site was also big enough to construct another six courts outside, four hard courts and two artificial grass courts, which are now all equipped with floodlighting.
🎾 2020: The club had an established reputation for providing top class tennis coaching, strength and conditioning and sports psychology for all ages and abilities, in addition to catering and bar facilities. We had new LED floodlighting installed in our indoor court area and our four tarmac courts outdoors were repainted in the club colours.
🎾 2022: Widnes Tennis Academy changed its name to Widnes Tennis Club on 14th February 2022, but the original Lane Tennis Club is, of course, still a very significant part of the Club’s history.
