On an overcast Tuesday evening, the weather was somewhat unpredictable for the newly formed Willand Men's Winter B Team to make their debut on a trip away to hosts Newton Abbot.
The high spirited, debutants, Derek, Gary, Martin, and Garreth were eager to get some initial points against an amalgamated winter team, Newton Abbot.
Derek and Gary fought hard in their first match, with the dynamic duo going all out to gain a set against a well gelled Newton side to take them into a closely contested 10 point tie break, losing 10-7.
In their second Match, against Newtons nominated 'A' team, Derek and Gary again fought hard and had games on the board to show for it, but struggled to get much past the strong, finely tuned opposition.
Garreth and Martin went out on court with a trend to set and hopes of gaining some all important first points on the board. Taking on the A team, the Willand pair had variable success on their service games but clinched the first set 3-6. A strong Newton pair showed their competitive spirit, gaining the second set, leading the Willand lads into a deciding 10 point tie break. The pair regained their serving success and went ahead in the tie break, fighting hard to take it, 4-10, winning the match.
Garreth and Martin returned to the court to face Newtons 'B's' following a short break and were unable to regain momentum and struggled against the hard hitting opposition, beaten in straight sets.
An, overall great evening of tennis, enjoyed by the new Willand side, finished off with some much appreciated refreshments from Gordon and the team at Newton Abbot. A brilliant start to the winter season.
Onward and upwards, with the next fixture, seeing, Toby, Colin, Simon and Ben away to Sidmouth.
