A Bright Future for Wing Tennis Club

For the last 9 years, Wing Tennis Club’s number one goal has been to secure floodlighting. Every year, the committee has slowly got closer and closer to our dream of lighting up Wing’s courts, facing trials and tribulations along the way. Finally, on 22nd February 2025, we hosted the official Floodlight Launch, with all three courts being lit up.

To celebrate, we wrapped up and kept warm with hot drinks, hot dogs, and cake before three VIPs turned on each court’s floodlights. We had a count down for youngest members to officially switch on our floodlights for the very first time.

For us, the main highlight of the launch was seeing the courts used throughout the celebrations and in the dark. This is what we’ve envisioned for so long, and it was surreal to finally witness our club’s dreams coming true.

It was always going to be a long term project, however none of us could have predicted it would be this long! Our committee has changed an awful lot throughout this time, and we are grateful for every committee member we’ve had over the years, keeping our club going and helping move the project along where they could.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and put together a memorable night.

What This Means For The Club

Extended Court Usage – Floodlights allow us to play into every evening up until 10pm. Not only is evening play extended, the opportunity to play tennis at Wing will now go into the Winter months where play has not been possible outside of day time hours.

Maximise Play Time – With evening tennis now an option, there is the possibility for our members to play more. This could be more teams, more coaching, and more social play to suit members who have not been able to attend before due to timing and scheduling.

Levelling The Playing Field - We were one of the last clubs with in Aylesbury and Milton Keynes that did not have the option of floodlighting. This puts Wing on the same level as other clubs we play against, allowing for more time to play matches and no threat of sunset finishing a match prematurely.

Great – How Can I Get on Court?!

For now, the floodlights can be used on an ad-hoc basis and for scheduled matches. We will be sending emails to existing members on how to use the floodlights.

We’re keen to get the floodlights used on a regular basis for all members to come and play together. We intend to schedule a regular social evening under the lights, and we’ll be in contact with members once this has been set up.

As we know, electricity bills continue to climb, and we will see a big increase in our bills now that we have the use of floodlights. That being said, we want to keep the use of floodlights completely free for the remainder of the 2024/25 membership, and enjoy the new facilities available. Our intension is to keep this free for the rest of the year while we monitor usage. Just book your court online as normal!
