Final Summer league positions

After another enjoyable Summer of tennis, the first with nine Writhlington teams competing, the final match of the season has been played and the results are in.  Final positions and fortunes, just like the scores throughout the Summer, were varied.  The final position of all the teams in their leagues are shown at the bottom of the page.

The men finally managed a clean sweep of wins in the last week of the season. Whilst this was too late for the 1sts and 4ths to avoid finishing 5th out of 6 (and hence probable relegation), the 5ths recorded their 4th win on the trot to finish mid-table! The 3rds, robbed of promotion by the admin error of last week, will be clear favourites to win their division next season. Meanwhile the 2nds have amassed 66 points, normally easily enough to be promoted, but a whisker short of 2nd place Knowle’s 68.

Two of the four Ladies teams on the other hand, have acheived certain promotion afer a cracking good season.  Congratulations to the 2nds and 3rds who both finished top of their divisions.  In their first season the fourths were denied this position by the merest ONE point! The 1sts were always going to face a stiff challenge up in Division 1 but despite this still finished in 5th place.

Thank you to all those who played this season, particularly the reserves who step in at short notice to cover last minute problems. Special mentioned to Bob Sonderman here, because he did this several times. The men's captains deserve a round of applause for organising their teams week in, week out, and coping with the many demands of players and Men’s Co-ordinator.  And thanks once again to Sarah for keeping the ladies playing each week.

If you are missing the matches then there are now Late Summer leagues to occupy you.  We have two men's seniors teams playing at present, one ladies seniors and two mixed teams. Please contact the team coordinators if you are interested in playing.
