We had a fabulous celebration weekend to mark the centenary of Bishop's Castle Tennis Club at the end of July.
Over a hundred people came along to enjoy the free events over two days of tennis, tournaments and tea!
Saturday 29th July 2023
It all started at 9am with our coach Wendy Griffiths leading the juniors in an hour of coaching, skills and games.
That was followed by a two hour adult session with Wendy and Nigel Hunter from We Do Tennis with lots of drills and tips for members and some new faces who enjoyed it so much they decided to join the club.
On Saturday afternoon, members joined in a fun tournament run by our ladies captain Vanessa Campbell, with the winners David Cross, Chris Fall and Margaret Kodz recieving a set of balls as a prize.
And to finish off the day there was an evening BBQ party for members and guests with live music and dancing til late.
Sunday 30th July 2023
The day didn't look too promising, weather wise, but the morning's coaching sessions were very popular and once again, a great success.
And then the big event - the rain just about held off as the crowd gathered on courtside seats to watch a thrilling exhibition match of high level tennis from Shropshire based Tommy Loxley and Duarte Monteiro, with Tommy winning a very close match.
It was breathtaking to see such athletic performances close up - you can see in the photos how much energy they put in!
The weekend's celebrations were rounded off with a delicious afternoon tea of sandwiches and cakes, with guests including members past and present along with local VIP's.
Many took the time to admire a fascinating display of the club's history with photos through the decades, put together by Anne-Marie Jackson.
We'd like to thank Bishop's Castle Town Council for their grant which helped make the events possible, and a big thank you goes to all the committee and members who worked so hard to make the weekend so memorable and enjoyable. Here's to the next 100 years!
