We recently learnt that former club chair, John Harris died recently.
John was an enthusiastic regular player for about 20 years till about 2005 with an especially strong right handed forehand.
During his playing time Sunday morning men’s sessions started at 7.30am! He could be relied upon to bring a real joie de vivre to the courts.
John was the Chairman for about 10 years till 2015. He brought his Boys Langton Headmaster skills to committee meetings deftly delegating jobs. John was always very thorough with anything he took on but there was also another side to him where he was remembered as current member, Annie has said “a softie at heart”.
Once his days on court finished, as a neighbour of Bridge Tennis Club - his garden was on the village side of court 1. He kindly kept an eye on the clubhouse and the courts and was always available for any post and alarm problems.
Just as the wider community enjoyed his energy, we too remember John for bringing his endless enthusiasm, skills and flair to the club for which we are indebted.
Penny Morgan remembers:
"His involvement with the club was just one of his many interests: a fine pianist often playing the organ in services held at St Peter’s – the village church, and elsewhere, he was a long-time member and a former President of Canterbury Rotary club where he was involved in many charitable events, and as the Musical Director for the Rotary club he and his team founded “Top Choir Kent” bringing and promoting choirs from school-children to adults culminating in a yearly event fund-raising event for Canterbury-based charities."
