Brooklands Annual Report: 2021-2

After all the restrictions 2021 has been a more normal year for the tennis section with our teams being able to play competitive matches. Our 7 senior teams managed to retain their positions in their respective divisions. Although there was no socialising after matches all players enjoyed the chance to play other clubs both home and away.

Our booking system has encouraged fixed fours to play throughout the year and the courts are well used. There are a number of social times that allow our new members to make friendships and improve their tennis. Since lockdown there has been a welcome increase in 25 both Senior and Junior members which is very satisfying.

Our annual tournament was held in July and August with finals day on September 12th. The weather was kind to us, and we presented our trophies on court after the matches, rather like Wimbledon. Thanks to Dermot Regan for his organisation.

The section held two social functions this year, one musical evening where two of our members, Dave Brotton and Alec Morrow entertained us with a medley of music, and in November Paul Mo provided a Chinese buffet which was enjoyed by all who attended.

Our most successful event was our Open Day which happened in September. The section decided it was time to publicise our club and encourage both juniors and adults to see our facilities. Thanks to brilliant advertising by Olenka Brain at one point there were over 100 young people on court with our coaches. Many adults came for a Rusty Rackets session at the end of the day. As a result, we acquired a number of new members. It was good to have the support of the cricket section who sent two coaches down to give the juniors the opportunity to try out cricket as well.

Our courts are beginning to show signs of wear and tear. The hard work done by Nigel Lewis and Paul the groundsman is much appreciated and they are looking at ways to improve the playing surfaces. Replay Maintenance continue to brush and sand the courts at regular intervals.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge work done by the Junior section and all the parents who support them. We have a thriving section with many fine players within the club. There were 6 teams entered in the Summer National League, with the 11U Boys division 1 winners. 8 Teams have been entered in the Winter League.
