Cerney Lakes Leaps again in Gloucestershire League

For a small club of less than a hundred members we were thrilled to have over 40% of our players enter league tennis for 2016.  This reflects the spirit of the club, which above all is about enjoying the game!

Women’s A

Maureen Henshall (a young over 60!) captained the A team - which had gained promotion last year from division 4 to division 3.  The A team stormed into 3rd place in division 3 ably assisted by the incredible Rowena Wakefield-her combination of young legs, great talent and superb shots sealed the deal!

Women’s B

Once again Wendy Murphy captained a winning team.  Only just up from Division 6 last year, the B’s rose again from division 5 to 4 in one season.  Well done Jan, Kathryn, Lyn, Sue and Karen.

Women’s C

Captained by Julie Andrews.

For the first year we entered a third team and were proud to achieve promotion from Division 6 to Division 5 by finishing second.   Our set percentage, having tied on two rubbers with other teams, was the key, highlighting that fighting for every set really does matter in the end.  We were a nervous bunch, most of us having never played league tennis before.  Thanks to the encouragement of our more experienced teams (they steadfastly watched, guided and clapped) we had an exhilarating beginning in league tennis.  I for one have never been so tired or so happy at the end of a game of tennis!

The guys

Men’s A

A fantastic result for Mark Stevens and his team, who kept cool under pressure.  Having just come up from division 3 to division 2 last season, they fought brilliantly to remain in this higher division ending the season on a high in division 2!

Men’s B

Captained by David Tonner

New to the role David did a splendid job- given this newly formed team and minus his appendix (it’s a scary story involving an aeroplane).   One more set won and they would have stayed up- but unfortunately will be relegated this season.  They live to fight another day and are raring to go in 2017!

Over the summer season 21 women and 15 men represented the club - and there is more to come....

The over 60s Winter Leagues will be starting late September and we will be entering a women's doubles team for a second year and mixed doubles team for the first time.

CLTC has applied to enter 2 teams in The Stroud Sunday Winter League and we will know if this bid is successful on 19th September 2016.

Community tennis continues to  thrive in Cerney Lakes – behind the scenes of course beats the heart of a dedicated committee who help keep it all on track....well on court anyway.
