Clay Court Care

Clay Court Maintenance  -  Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Clear Debris First: Before you start sweeping, pick up any large debris like leaves or twigs from the court surface.

2. Brush the Court:  Start at one net post and drag the mat across the court along the line of the net, then head down the side of the court outside the tram lines towards the fence, across the back of the court along the fence and continue walking in an inward spiral motion until you are in the middle of that side of the court.

Repeat the same action at the other end of the court. Do not simply drag the mat across the courts or up and down as this takes the sand away from the playing surface where it is needed. This is illustrated in the diagram below.

You should not brush or use the drag nets if the court is wet.

Clay Court How To Drag

3Brush the Lines: Use the smaller, specialized line brush to carefully sweep the clay away from the court lines.

Keep the line brush at a consistent angle to avoid digging into the lines.

4.  Sweep Footwear:  Before leaving the court, use the brushes provided at the gate to remove excess clay from your shoes.

This helps prevent spreading the clay around the club grounds.

If we all do this basic maintenance and we have a contractor who does a “deep clean” at least twice a year, then there is no reason why this surface will not last for 15 or 20-years!

The price of playing on this wonderful surface means a 3-minute sweep after every match – a price worth paying.
