Junior Coaching - Development

Our Junior Tennis Programme provides the perfect introduction to the sport for children aged 5 to 16.

DEVELOPMENT

The Club’s Junior Tennis Programme sessions run throughout the week after school and on Saturday and Sunday mornings, with pupils signing up on a termly basis. The Junior Programme helps players develop tennis fundamentals and passion for the game and allows them to progress in an inclusive and nurturing environment.

Please contact Marcus French on 07961 382151 for all development enquiries.

TENNIS FOR EVERY AGE AND ABILITY

Our Junior Programme, for children aged 6 – 18, follows the LTA Youth format. This ensures all players progress within each of the stages, relevant to their age and ability.

Packed full of dynamic training and fun games, your children’s skills will grow, as well as their love for tennis.

Red - SERVE, RALLY, AND SCORE
For children aged 6-8 years
School Years: Y2 & Y3
Overarm serves, basic strokes, rallies, scoring. It’s soft balls and small courts but they’re learning everything they’ll need for the game ahead.

Orange - DEVELOP A ROUNDED GAME
For children aged 8-9 years
School Years: Y3 - Y5
Playing on a ¾ size court with soft balls, here our players continue to develop all the skills they’ve been learning. We also add tactics, extra techniques to include spins, singles and doubles play, and, of course, loads of fun.

Green - FINE TUNE YOUR TECHNIQUE
For children aged 9-11 years
School Years: Y5-Y7
It’s time for kids to play on full size courts. Here it’s all about growing their game by fine tuning and refining the techniques they’ve learned so far as well as beginning to add more advanced strokes. Kick serve anyone?

Yellow - TAKE YOUR SKILLS FURTHER
For children aged 11-18 years
School Years: Y7+
At the Yellow stage, children are playing on a full size court with adult balls. Children will continue to explore different game styles and start to find their own. They will continue to evolve physically, mentally, tactically and technically to allow them to play and compete in a sport they’ve come to love for the rest of their lives.

With junior coaching at Northway Tennis you should see:

  • Each child developing friendships and social skills, as well as important sporting values such as respect for the game, the rules and the opponent, dealing with winning and losing, and understanding effort, application and concentration.
  • The use of slower red, orange or green balls, smaller courts and smaller rackets following the guidelines set out by the LTA.
  • Coaches using progressive annual training plans for each group which define the key skills to be developed in each term.
  • Training in every lesson to help develop physical literacy, including movement, balance and coordination. This may be done using different types of equipment, and not always with the racket in hand
  • Training in every lesson to help your child to develop the technical and tactical essentials of the game
  • Your child rallying and playing with other children and with the coach so that they learn to cooperate and compete with others in the group
  • A professional coach who starts each lesson on time is planned and prepared for each lesson and organises the lesson in a structured and efficient way
  • An animated coach who effectively organises the children to play and creates a fun and friendly environment.
