Snow stops play

2024 was characterised by frequent rainstorms, leading to some flooding on the courts and interruptions in play. However, between the downpours, and equipped with extensive experience in dealing with unpredictable weather from the Pennines, Park’s annual tennis programme continued to operate seamlessly.

Despite inclement weather conditions, Park took decisive action, offering an array of engaging activities, including:

  • Free coaching taster sessions for primary school children new to tennis, the sessions being packed with fun activities, prizes, stickers, and free refreshments
  • Free after-school social sessions for parents or guardians and their children (no coaching involved) to foster community engagement
  • Free high school social tennis sessions for older junior members and non-members (again, without coaching) to encourage participation
  • LTA’s Youth Start programme, specifically designed for primary school children, provided a comprehensive coaching package that included a racket, balls, and a t-shirt

For adult members and non-members:

  • Rusty Rackets courses designed for newcomers and those returning to the game, achieving an impressive 60% retention rate after the course
  • A fantastic season for members in the Calderdale League, with players claiming numerous trophies and accolades

On the social front, members actively engaged in the 50-Squared Challenge organized by Voluntary & Community/Active Calderdale and led by Park member, Cathy Winterbottom.

We must give thanks to our sponsors, listed below, for their invaluable financial support throughout the season.

And to all our volunteers who work tirelessly year upon year to help make Park Tennis Club the best place to be.

This season, players were able to make the most of their time on court until late one afternoon, mid-November. When the sun set over the horizon, a gentle snowfall began to blanket the clay rendering it almost invisible, until it eventually disappeared from view.

Our clay courts will be on view again next March/April, when we look forward to welcoming new members and old to the 2025 season at Park Tennis Club.
