LTA Young Persons Welfare Ambassador

On the 30th May, the LTA officially launched the Young Person's Welfare Ambassador (YPWA) programme. Not only is this significant for the LTA and tennis in general but also for our Club as one of our juniors Andrew Luo has been selected to be one of the twenty-five national ambassadors.

The scheme is aimed at young people at LTA registered venues with the specific objective of raising awareness of safeguarding and to provide a direct link to those most at risk. Further information can be found by following the link: https://www.lta.org.uk/news/lta-launches-first-ever-young-persons-welfare-ambassadors-scheme/

In addition to this, we would like to share with you some further information in Andrew's own words:

1) Why he signed up for the scheme?

I signed up to be a YPWA because I wanted to make a positive impact encouraging young people to play tennis like me.

I've been playing tennis since I could hold a racket. I've been lucky enough to take part in regional and county tournaments with lots of other talented young players. Since I'm always competing in tennis tournaments, I really wish more young people could experience the fun and excitement of playing tennis in a safe and enjoyable environment.

2) What he's hoping to learn/get out of it?

Being part of the YPWA program is beyond thrilling. I am hoping to learn new skills and to spread awareness about keeping young people safe. My big goal is to make sure the voices of young people like us are heard loud and clear.  I want to help create communities where everyone feels included and equal, and where everyone can enjoy playing tennis.  By volunteering, speaking up for others, and being a good listener, I'm determined to make a positive impact in tennis by promoting a safe and inclusive environment for all participants.

3) How he thinks it can help venues?

Since I became YPWA, my local club officer Mike has already met me for cake/coffee. We discussed some initiatives on supporting me and helping the club to raise awareness and promote a safe and enjoyable tennis experience for young people.

  • I can lead by example and demonstrate good sportsmanship, fair play, and respect towards fellow players and venue staff. By embodying positive values, I can inspire others to do the same.
  • I can provide feedback and suggestion between young players and our welfare officer, offering feedback on programs, facilities and any concerns or suggestions that can promote the overall experience for young people.
  • I can promote Club 50th Anniversary events in June to young players and encourage them to take part in the fun filled tournaments.  It will be an amazing experience for all of us to participate at this great celebration.

I feel so grateful for this amazing opportunity to be a LTA Young Person Welfare Ambassador. I can't wait to learn from all the other ambassadors. Thank you for giving me this chance!

We will also be displaying a new poster at the Club, highlighting Andrew's role.
