Pickleball is a new racquet sport with rapidly growing popularity around the world – and now it has reached Royal Wootton Bassett. Recognising the popularity of the sport among players young and old, in May the Tennis Club arranged two trial pickleball sessions which attracted great interest.
Played with solid racquets on a small court, pickleball is a fast-paced game for four players. The nature of the game means that even entry-level players can enjoy the fun and build fitness and skills. RWB Tennis Club Captain Kirsten Walker set up the sessions along with Ali Ward, club head coach. Kirsten was delighted with the response to the trial sessions saying, ‘all the participants had a great time, picked up the rules very quickly and by the end of the session showed some real pickleball skills.’
The second session was supported by Swindon Pickleball Club (https://www.swindonpickleballclub.org/) which caters for local enthusiasts and is seeing real growth in the popularity of the sport. Swindon Pickleball Club welcomes new members, and offers training and competitive opportunities.
The sports of tennis and pickleball require different skills and together cater for players of all abilities and ambitions. The Tennis Club is keen to encourage both tennis and pickleball players to play at our courts and are currently planning a schedule of pickleball events.
