Our Charity 2025
Town Walls Tennis Club is supporting:
SAMARITANS OF SHREWSBURY
Samaritans of Shrewsbury is an independent local charity that is affiliated to the central Samaritans
charity; this means it needs to raise all of its own funds to keep its branch open. The
annual running costs are approximately £40,000. Shrewsbury Samaritans currently
have 89 volunteers and, apart from a cleaner, there are no paid staff managing or
operating our branch. The volunteers provide compassionate support to callers in
distress; and also undertake outreach to our local communities, offering support and
raising awareness and specialised training to local groups.
Over the last 12-months the Shrewsbury branch has:
• Answered over 10,000 calls
• Replied to over 2,000 emails
• Had over 650 webchat conversations
• Supported over 200 people in the local community
The Shrewsbury branch has an outstanding record for being there for
its callers when it is most needed. Statistics show that almost 1 in 4
of these contacts are from people expressing suicidal thoughts or
plans. 1 in 15 of its callers talk about self-harming and a quarter of
these have contacted Samaritans to try to help them stop harming
themselves at that moment.
The Shrewsbury branch regularly visits the Barnabus food bank and
Shrewsbury train station to offer emotional support to people
experiencing distress.
Other outreach activities include:Supporting staff when there has been a sudden death or suicide in
Shropshire schools
Training and supporting prisoners to be Listeners for other prisoners
Delivering talks and training in Active Listening Skills
Attending awareness raising events across the county
