30th Annual General Meeting

Tuesday 18th April 2023 at Willaston Memorial Hall Committee Room

Chairman’s Report, 2022/23 Season

Committee Meetings

These were held on 22nd September 2022 and 16th February.  All were carried out in person at the Nags Head, Willaston. A big thank you to the committee for attending.

I am grateful to Mike Bode who has continued liaise with LTA on Safeguarding and Risk Assessments and to Graham for his support in my work as interim membership secretary.

Thanks also to Lynn Barnes our secretary of course for keeping up with my ramblings and putting it into good order

Thanks to Will Straighton for organising the ball recycling and his liaison with the Residents committee again.

Thanks also to Jamie Donahue for taking on the role of safeguarding officer again – WTC were subject to a Safeguarding Audit and a couple of minor points were raised that Mike and Jamie have actioned before the 10th April Deadline imposed.

And finally to all the committee this year for your support through a truly unique few years. I couldn’t have done it without you all

Social Events

The ‘Annual’ Christmas Meal took place on 3rd December at the Nags Head for the first time. My thanks to Graham for booking. There were generally very favourable comments about the food and the atmosphere. There was a consensus that we would be happy to return next year.

Coaching

Free Coaching was put on hold this year while the court re-surfacing took priority.

Berin Ames also organised regular junior coaching sessions on Saturdays throughout the year when numbers were sufficient. Again some very positive feedback from members.

Regular Tennis Sessions

Both the Sunday tennis league and the Tuesday morning sessions ran whenever restrictions allowed. We are grateful to Jonathon, Gwenda, Janet and Mike for ensuring the smooth running of these sessions.

Walking Tennis also started when conditions allowed with a small and regular group getting to grips with the rules

A regular Friday afternoon session has also continued to which all are welcome – drinking afterwards is not obligatory.

We were also delighted that Willaston primary School continued to take advantage of the courts during the year. There is an initiative by the LTA to encourage a youth start programme through primary schools and Berin has teamed up with the school to run these sessions on Tuesday afternoons

LTA Registered Venue Status

Wimbledon tickets could be applied for via an online ballot by individual members

Committee Membership

There have been no offers to take on Membership Secretary so far – on going

Court Resurfacing

The committee took the decision in March 2022 to go direct to members for pledges to the court resurfacing project which have a cost of £25,267.00 for both courts including new posts and nets.

It was with great gratitude that £4800 was received from members including a £1000 donation from Anita Mitchell.

The courts were resurfaced by Platt Construction w/c 11th May 2022 with temporary lines but unfortunately the final paint surface was not applied owing to painter availability and weather. The current target for painting is May 2023 when weather is warmer.

It was also with gratitude that we received confirmation that our CIL fund application for £7000 had at last been successful. The club will now have a good start on the ongoing sinking fund for improvements and future refurbishments

Grounds Tidy up

The bushes and brambles at the southern end of the courts were cut right down to prevent them coming into the court. The willow on the Southwest corner needs particular attention to stop ingress of roots under the court. My thanks to the committee working party (Janet, Paul, Ken, Gordon, Will)

Johnsons Recreation Ground - Pavilion

On weds 6th July 8.00pm 2022 representatives from the Tennis Club, Football Club, Johnsons Rec Committee, CWAC Parks and Allotments Department and Myles Hogg met via zoom to discuss the future potential of the Pavilion. The Johnson Recreation ground is hoping to receive CIL or section 104 monies of around £35K.

The tennis club expressed its wish to see better dedicated toilets for the tennis club and a verandah that could be used to view games and provide a shelter in poor weather.

No further progress has been made as we are awaiting a response from CWAC on the legal framework required to progress these discussions as CWAC have responsibility for the building.
