Weekly Update!
Match Reports
Acle B v Wortham A
When recently in North Africa in an area filled with the Entrepreneurial
natives, I visited a bar which without purchasing a drink I dared to use their
WC, a man ran in the WC shouting at me, as I faced a urinal, pay 5 Euros
before, before. Being a Captain for a few years now has taught me two things,
expect the unexpected and the power of control. There was no time to
negotiate on his price as this can take hours in this part of the world but 5
Euros is clearly taking what I was about to do, so I took my business elsewhere.
So when at short notice you receive a text, I have sliced my finger, gone to A
&E, so it will be difficult for me to play, I do hope you find someone though.
You use the experience you have gained, expect the unexpected and above all
control the situation. Upon receiving this news most Captains would panic,
however having had a player turn up with blood pouring from his barnet you
just fall into action. Your thoughts should always be with the injured but
sometimes however Captains thoughts are elsewhere and think to themselves,
who on earth I can get to play at short notice. So it was poor Laura who was
out of action but within a few minutes the ever loyal Jane Jackson had come to
the Captains rescue.
Wortham A sit on top of the league tree having only lost two sets from sixteen,
not a bad start for the 2016/17 Division 2 league winners who asked to remain
within the same division so they could win it again (jokes). However Acle B
with in the camp has a desire to win and is relishing a challenge.
Ian and Jane started to play against the strong Wortham pair and you could
see almost instantly it was going to be a close affair. Jane and Ian would need
to pull something very special out of the bag to get something from this duel.
Credit where credit is due; Jane played some inspired tennis with Ian playing a
commanding role. It was a tremendous result for the Acle one’s to take both
sets with a thoroughly spirited performance.
Paul and Andi battled hard and took the first set 6-4. Andi again produced
some wonderful tennis and the the Wortham pairing seemed frustrated losing
the battles against Andi who would not give an inch of ground. The Captain was able to now and again show some support in the partnership but Andi is
playing with a sincere conviction second to none 6-2 to Acle.
The change around at 4 sets up was an inspired position to hold and Paul and
Ian put in a shift but the Wortham men were an experienced partnership and
although Ian did his very best winning his service games an injury his partner
was disguising was being exploited by the opposition to their ultimate
advantage and both sets were narrowly taken by the Worthamites.
Jane and Andi just went for it from the off and nods and glances were
exchanged between the Acle four. The Captain knew from how the Acle ladies
were walking they were in the lead. A terrific two sets bagged by the ladies and
the tennis so entertaining to watch, although it was not tickling one spectators
fancy. It may have been that a pending visit to the Grotto to ask Santa for the
Division 2 title for Mummy was on her mind. As such a well behaved girl I am
sure she will be rewarded by Santa.
To conclude and this may be hard to believe, but what I am about to write is
absolutely true. The back ground, seven ladies have either called off or
informed the Captain of their injury concerns advising a replacement may be
necessary in the last two years all at short notice on one occasion when I was
getting in my car to leave for a match. I mentioned this to a fellow very
ambitious Winter league Captain and I also said in jest but with a straight face
that I had looked in to this in some detail and using my male registered team
as disguised females doing a Mrs Doubtfire a Tootsie or those slightly mature a
Jack Lemmon in Some Like it Hot. He said I have looked in to that already but
LTA have a policy and you have to undergo Gender re assignment and then
have to wait so long before you can play again. The desire to win in Winter
League is clearly greater than I ever thought even greater than the Summer
City League, but it did get me thinking just how far will the team go for their
Captain!
