Captains Role
A tennis club league captain is responsible for the overall management and success of their team within the league. This includes team selection, communication with players, ensuring smooth match operations, and representing the team positively. They also act as a point of contact for the club committee regarding team-related matters.
Team Selection and Management:
It is the Captain's choice whether to:
- 'rotate' their team from available squad members, or
- Selecting players: Choosing the best team for each match, considering player availability, skill level, and team balance.
- Managing substitutions: Making on-the-spot decisions during matches to optimize performance.
- to select who they consider their strongest team is for each match, or
- to select teams with the opposition in mind
- Liaising with other captains:Coordinating with other team captains for scheduling and player availability, especially when players might play for multiple teams.
Code of Conduct
Ensuring team cohesion by:
- Fostering a positive and supportive team environment .
- Promoting good sportsmanship.
- Encouraging fair play.
- Setting a positive behavior to all team members.
Process for requesting players from other Captains:
- This needs to be timely and captains should know, at the latest, the day after a match whether they have a shortfall of players for the following match. This allows for the impact of injuries sustained in the match just played.
- Keeping the availability schedule updated on a regular basis for each team will help all captain's identify weeks where there may be a shortage of players in some/all teams.
Communication of Teams to Players & other Captains:
Captains notify the team make-up to their team members on their own team Whatsapp group AND on the Captain's Whatsapp group. This worked well last year, as the Fixture Secretary was able to update the availability schedule with matches played by each team member, which:
- ensured lower team members didn't play more than 2 matches for a higher team and thus become an additional 'nominated' player in the higher team [City & Suburban League only].
- enabled keeping track of matches played by each player, for collecting match fees at the end of the season
Other Duties:
- ensure team members are aware of match venue and start time and travel arrangements for away matches
- collect match fees and pay over to the Treasurer
- contact opposition captain to agree level of refreshments to be provided/received [SMC Men's & Ladies only]
- liaise with opposition captain in case of bad weather
- bring 2 tubes of appropriate tennis balls for home matches [SMC League - Slazenger balls, City & Suburban League - Head Tour balls, National League - any make of ball but usually use Head Tour balls].
