Board of Trustees

A Board of Trustees is the governing body of a non-profit organization, charity, university, or public institution, responsible for its strategic direction, financial health, and legal accountability. They hold a fiduciary duty to act in the best interests of the organization and its beneficiaries.

Key aspects of a board of trustees include:

  • Accountability: They are legally accountable for the organisation's actions.
  • Responsibilities: They set the mission, vision, and values, ensure regulatory compliance, manage risk, and appoint senior management, but generally do not handle day-to-day operations.
  • Structure: Comprised of elected or appointed individuals who must act collectively.
  • Purpose:  Trustees often manage funds, property, or assets held "in-trust" for others.
