All players are assigned to different ranking Pots according to their ability, ranging from 1-4 with the better players being located in Pot 1, etc. Ranks are determined by me as organiser but takes into consideration a number of factors, e.g. what team/level a player has played for/at in the past, how they have performed in previous tournament, etc. A player’s rank will determine two things:

  1. Where a player starts in the initial groups. In order to ensure a mixed range of abilities within each of the starting groups, players from the different Pots will be ‘shared out’ amongst the initial groups.
  2. A player’s handicap. We want to make the tournament fun and as fair as it can be so we have decided that the players from the different Pots will be assigned different handicaps. Players from Pot 1 will have a negative 40 handicap, players from Pot 2 will have a negative 30 handicap, players from Pot 3 will have a negative 15 handicap and players from Pot 4 will have a 0/love handicap (no handicap).

This means for example, where a match involves a player from Pot 1 and a player from Pot 3, the higher ranked player from Pot 1 will start on the score of negative 30-0 (i.e. negative 40 v negative 15).

Where a match involves a player from Pot 3 and a player from Pot 4, the higher ranked player will start on the score of negative 15-0 (i.e. negative 15 v 0/love). Players' handicaps can be seen by clicking on the link to the Championship Tables above and selecting the appropriate tab.

All matches the best of 3 sets (with the deciding set, should it be required, being a 10 point tie break – with a 2 point margin). The first two sets will be decided by a 7-point tie-break if the score reaches 6 games all.

To keep the tournament moving forward we have suggested time-periods in which games should be played and where possible matches should be played within those allotted time-periods. These time-periods can be seen by viewing the spread sheet, which will be updated regularly (see the link above). However, to accommodate other commitments, matches may be played before the allotted time period if both players agree or, providing the tournament organiser is informed before the end of the allotted time period, deferred to the 'next' time period in the event of illness, injury or inclement weather. However, matches cannot be deferred beyond the 'next' time-period.

Where no 'notification to defer' is received, matches not played within the allotted time-period will be forfeited with neither player credited.

If a player concedes without starting a match, their opponent will be awarded a '2 set to 0 win’ (6-0, 6-0).

If a player concedes after a match has started, their opponent will be credited with a '2 Set to 1' win if the conceding player has won a previous set (games won up that point will stand), or a 2 Sets to 0' win if they have not (games won up to that point will stand).

If a player withdraws from the tournament during the 'Group Stages' their name will be deleted from the match schedule and all matches played by them before their withdrawal declared 'null and void'. If they withdraw during the 'Knockout Stage' their opponent will advance.

Following a match, both players shall text/email the result to the tournament organiser (confirmation required), detailing the result of each individual set.

The winner of a 'Group' shall be the player with the greatest number of wins. In the case of a 'tie', the Group will be decided by:
1. Set Difference;
2. Game Difference; and then
3. The result of the match between the two players concerned.

The winners of each Group and those finishing 2nd shall proceed into the Knockout Stage of the tournament to challenge for the Cup. The players finishing in the lower positions will advance to a 'Plate' knockout.

Players must have paid their entry fee, are to provide their own tennis balls, must pay floodlight fees where appropriate and adhere to the current advice on Covid-19.

Enjoy the tournament.
