2023 East Of Scotland League Match results - Weeks 8&9

WEEK 9 Results:

Women's First Team (Div 1), captain: Suzie Provan

A strong win over Blackhall for the 1sts this week, winning 10-2. This increases our lead over Thistle and keeps us top of the table.

Women's Second Team (Div 2), captain: Janine Frew

Braid 2 beat North Berwick 1 at Home, securing an 11-3 win. Sophie and Lorraine (2nd pair) were unlucky not to beat NB 1st pair, losing 7-5, 6-7, 0-1. We are currently sitting top of the table, above Mortonhall.

Women's Third Team (Div 3A), captain: Amy Allen

Our penultimate game of the season was home to league toppers Lomond Park, their first pair have yet to lose a set this season. We were hoping to turn around our loss from their home fixture but knew we had a lot of work to do.

A strong lomond park 1st pair defeated a slower starting Amy and Andrea, an equally strong 2nd pair gave Eileen and Maeve a tighter game but LP still came out victorious. Hazel and Viv have a very strong performance as 3rd couple to bring home a 2-1 win over a LP 3rd pair who kept the ball in play well and used the setting sun to their advantage with their shot choice!

Into the second round and Amy and Andrea took on the 3rd couple. Another tight game but we came away with a 2-0 win. Viv and Hazel gave a good game to the 2nd pair but LP held strong. A tight match between Eileen and Maeve and their 1st couple saw the victory go to LP 9-4 at the end of the day.

A well deserved win to keep LP top of the table and promoted to div 2 next season, Braid remains in 2nd place in the division heading to Drummond next week for our final match of the season.

Women's Fourth Team (Div 5B), captain Mhairi Reid

We were away to Mortonhall 3 this week who fielded a strong team. There were a number of close matches but ultimately the win went to Mortonhall 3, 11-2. A big thanks to everyone who played and to Anne, Fiona S and Mhairi B for coming down to support.

DUNLOP EAST OF SCOTLAND MEN’S LEAGUE 2023 (Week 9)

Men’s First Team (Division 2)

A close but crucial win for the men’s 1st team away to Waverley, taking victory 8-6. The team of Alex Lesiuk, Callum Caves, Tom Johnston, Louis Duthie Gray, Jimmy Wood, and Gary Melville secured an important 2 points to give Braid an unassailable lead in division 2 with one week remaining.

Men’s Second Team (Division 3)

The men’s 2nd team, playing at home, lost 10-3 to Kirkcaldy 1sts. Max Chen and Ewen McMillin collected the three points for Braid in a good win against Kirkcaldy's third couple and losing a close championship TB to their first couple.

Men’s Third Team (Division 6A)

Braid men’s 3rd team secured a vital win, 10-7, at Lomond Park. The individual rubbers were mostly competitive; 5 super tiebreaks bore testament to that. Pairings were John/Pete Thomson, Gilberto/Mathias, and Ross/Pete Traynor. A home victory next week against Musselburgh will ensure second spot and thus promotion.

Men’s Fourth Team (Division 9A)

A fine performance from our men’s 4th team to beat top of the table Gullane 1s and thus secure promotion. Our pairings of Eugene Creally/Michael Smyth Juan Carlos Varona/Nick Wood and Callum Thomson/Jack Flower contributed to the victory. A win next Wednesday. in our final match away to Musselburgh 3s would secure top spot and complete a very successful campaign.

WEEK 8 Results:

Women's First Team (Div 1), captain: Suzie Provan

A clean sweep for the 1st team this week as we beat Dunfermline 12-0. A usually tough opponent, they are lacking some of their main players this year which certainly helped us along. Special shout out to Mhairi and Emily who didn't lose a game all night. We remain top of the table with a healthy set percentage difference over Thistle (who have the same number of points as us). Still work to do to secure the league, but we are on track.

Women's Second Team (Div 2), captain: Janine Frew

This week Braid 2 played away against Grange Dyvours 1s. The matches were hard fought but Braid won 8-5. Well done everyone.

Women's Third Team (Div 3A), captain: Amy Allen

A sunny evening saw us play indoor at DL Newhaven…. It was as warm inside as it was out! However a class with music on the courts behind and pickle ball on the next court made concentration difficult for all of the team except Rachel whose youth saw her boogie before serving and definitely did not put her off her game!

A strong team effort all round saw Amy and Eileen at first pair defeat their first couple 6-4, 7-5 in what felt like a marathon. Our second couple, Rachel and Diana were much quicker taking their first match 6-2, 6-2 and Cat and Kim at 3rd couple even quicker, winning 6-1, 6-0.

Onto the second round, Diana and Rachel again put in a quick and ruthless win, Amy and Eileen thankfully took less time to secure their victory and Cat and Kim, playing the first couple, managed to bring home the 12-0 victory just before we got thrown off the courts as DL was closing! Well done all, a well deserved clean sheet that still sees us sitting 2nd in the division.

Women's Fourth Team (Div 5B), captain Mhairi Reid

This week we were at home against Murrayfield who haven’t lost a match all season. We knew it would be a tough battle. At the end of the first round we were four sets apiece but Murrayfield ran away with it in the second round to win 9-5. Many thanks to everyone who played and to everyone who came down to cheer us on.
