2023 East of Scotland League Match results - Week 4 &5

Week 5

Women's First Team (Div 1), captain: Suzie Provan

A convincing win for the first team this week against Waverley, winning 12-1, and dropping only 14 games. As always at Waverley, we enjoyed a lovely match tea at the end. At the halfway point, we are second in the table, just behind Thistle.

Women's Second Team (Div 2), captain: Janine Frew

Braid 2 played Mortonhall 1st team at home this week. It was a tight and very long match but Braid won 8-6. This puts us top of division 2 so well done team.

Women's Third Team (Div 3A), captain: Amy Allen

Another beautiful night for tennis at home to Drummond 1sts. We didn’t really know what to expect from the team who had come down from the 2nd division last year but we had a strong team out again who were up for the challenge. Some steady play by Drummond meant first round matches were tight. Andrea and Maeve at first couple were faced with balls that kept coming back and some tricky lobbing by the Drummond first pair, but stuck to their game and came out with a well fought win. Amy and Eileen took on their second pair with a confident win, although possibly closer than the scoreline reflected. Hazel and Kim, who had kindly stepped in to play to save the day when I was struggling to get a full team, took on a tricky and determined 3rd couple. They came away with a victory, 14-12 in the MTB! It was almost impossible to watch in the end it was so close. The second round of matches proved slightly quicker, with 6 sets all going to Braid to seal a 12-1 victory. Celebrated with friendly chat and some lovely cheese!

Women's Fourth Team (Div 5B), captain Mhairi Reid

We were away to Dean this week and we’re just edged out of a win - Dean won 7-6. A big thanks to everyone who played.

DUNLOP EAST OF SCOTLAND MEN’S LEAGUE 2023  (Week 5)

Men’s First Team (Division 2)

Braid men’s 1st team managed another good win (12-5) away to Barnton Park 2s, with 5 of the 6 matches going to match tiebreaks! The team of Alex Lesiuk, Joe Edmunds, Jimmy Wood, Stef Van Walstijn, Tom Johnston, and Louis Duthie Gray took a clean sweep of matches, leaving them 2 points clear at the top of the table at the halfway point.

Men’s Second Team (Division 3)

Week five provided a home match for Braid 2nds against Aberdour 1sts. It also saw the welcome return of Gary Melville to match tennis. Unfortunately, despite two very tight matches, Gary and Adrian Moir could not win either rubber. Peter Thomson and Max Chen likewise fell short in a tight rubber against Aberdour 3rds. In the end, only Ewan McMillin and David Rigterink managed to pick up a rubber in a final 3-10 loss.

Men’s Third Team (Division 6A)

The Braid 3rd team had a confident 10-4 win at Musselburgh 2. The match was played in a congenial spirit. Despite the absence of John Charlton, we were able to put out a strong side, with the return of Graham Moffat to the squad. The pairings were Mathias/Graham, Roger/Pete Traynor and Gilberto/Ross Cobban.

Men’s Fourth Team (Division 9A)

The Men’s 4th team produced an outstanding home performance to beat Musselburgh’s 3rd team 11-3. Our first pairing of Eugene Creally/James Paulin fought back from a set and a break down to win their first rubber 2-1, then won 2-0 in their second game. Juan Carlos Varona/Nick Wood dominated both their matches to win both in straight sets. Callum Thomson/Jack Flower narrowly lost their first rubber on a tie break, then bounced back superbly to win the second match giving up just two games. Well done all.

Week 4

Women's First Team (Div 1), captain: Suzie Provan

A brilliant victory for Braid 1sts this week against a strong Blackhall team. We knew we had a chance of taking the match, but also knew it would be difficult, especially without our awesome Mhairi..... however.....we went above and beyond and won 11-4. We were all absolutely delighted! Wonderful weather topped off a fantastic evening......and Jill's homemade banana bread had another outing. Perfect ;-) We have also moved up to second in the table, sitting just behind Thistle.

Women's Second Team (Div 2), captain: Janine Frew

Braid 2 played North Berwick away on Tuesday. The weather was glorious and the tennis was even better. We won 10-3.

Women's Third Team (Div 3A), captain: Amy Allen

A lovely evening for tennis v Lomond Park saw our winning streak come to an end against very strong opposition. Great tennis and even better home made rocky road! A strong Lomond Park first couple combined strength and slice to flummox Maeve and Amy in the first round. Margaret made her first appearance this season with Cat and despite a strong game lost to a similarly strong second couple. Diana thankfully back from injury and Hazel had a great game against the 3rd couple but couldn’t take victory. The sun was still out for the second round. Unfortunately, Amy and Maeve had to retire early on in the first set. Diana and Hazel took on LPs mighty couple 1, had a great game but were not victorious. Cat and Margaret came away with a convincing win to bring home Braids 2 sets of the night. A 10-2 loss and sitting second in the league.

Women's Fourth Team (Div 5B), captain Mhairi Reid

Another tough match for the fourth team this week. We had a home match against Mortonhall 3 which started in sunshine and ended with the haar blowing in under the floodlights. We fought hard but ultimately lost 10-4. Thanks to all of our lovely supporters - Rachel, Anne, Rosemary, Susie, David and Eugene and to Amanda and Jacqui for some fabulous brownies and banana bread. Congratulations to Ali R who made her fourth team debut.

DUNLOP EAST OF SCOTLAND MEN’S LEAGUE 2023 (Week 4)

Men’s First Team (Division 2)

Braid men’s 1st team was back on winning form in week four of the leagues with a 12-3 victory over Waverley T1 at home. The team of Alex Lesiuk, Joe Edmunds, Angus Edward, Tom Johnston, Jimmy Wood, and Stef Van Walstijn took a clean sweep of matches, leaving our team 2 points clear at the top of the table.

Men’s Second Team (Division 3)

Braid 2nds made the long journey to Kirkaldy. In what must be one of the wettest evenings tennis has been played in the East League, Braid fought hard but ultimately lost 10-5. Christian Daly and Adrian Moir had the best performances of the match winning both their rubbers. However, another notable result was Peter Thomson and Alexey Dronov taking the Kirkaldy first couple to a championship tiebreak. Nevertheless, the 2nds are still looking for that first win to kickstart their season.

Men’s Third Team (Division 6A)

The Braid 3 men’s team won 8-4 at home to Lomond Park 3. A stellar first round lead of 6-0 laid the foundations for a comfortable win. Pairings were John Charlton/ Mathias, Roger/ Pete Traynor and Gilberto/Eugene. Lomond Park had Cole, an impressive 13-year-old, in their team.

Men’s Fourth Team (Division 9A)

Braid 4ths lost out narrowly 6-7 away to Gullane 1st team. The pairings of Nick Wood/Ross Cobban, Jack Flower/ Callum Thomson, and Stevan Alcock/Douglas Foggo fought back superbly from a 2-4 deficit to nearly snatching a draw.
