2023 East of Scotland League Match results - Week 1 - 3

Week 3 Match Reports:

Women's First Team (Div 1), captain: Suzie Provan

The 1sts had a dominant victory over Dunfermline this week, winning 12-0. Special mention to Mhairi and Heather for not even losing a game at the number one spot! :-) We sit third in the table after Blackhall and Thistle. All to play for and it will be interesting to see the standings at the halfway point in two weeks.

Women's Second Team (Div 2), captain: Janine Frew

The 2s had a great match with The Grange with 4 championship tie breaks. We won 11-5.

Women's Third Team (Div 3A), captain: Amy Allen

Both teams this week were so far unbeaten, a great team effort against DL Newhaven in tricky conditions meant that Braid 3s remain unbeaten and are still top of the table after week 3 with an 11-2 victory.

It has been lovely having such a strong selection of players this season and it is showing in our matches and results. Maeve and Eileen made a very strong 1st couple with 2 very different matches but both won with good margin. Cat and Kim had a quick first match and then faced DL 1st couple who were a strong match. A long and hard fought match, which was a delight to watch, ended in a 2-1 win to DL finishing 10-5 in the MTB at the end of a good night. Amy and Viv battled out their first match for a win, with a game that suited them better against the 2nd couple for the final round.

Well done all and thank you to our support crew who came to cheer us on, Eugene, David, Diana and Otis! It was very much appreciated on a somewhat windy and cold spring evening!

Women's Fourth Team (Div 5B), captain Mhairi Reid

This week was an away fixture against Murrayfield who are top of the division. We knew it was going to be tough so we did well to get four sets. Overall, the team lost 4-10. Thanks to everyone who played and to Anne for coming to support.

DUNLOP EAST OF SCOTLAND MEN’S LEAGUE 2023 (Week 3)

Men’s First Team (Division 2)

Braid men's 1st team had a closely fought away match against Dunfermline 1, falling just short with a 6-9 loss. The team of Alex Lesiuk, Angus Edward, Tom Johnston, Louis Duthie Gray, David Rigterink and Ewan McMillin put up a good fight against a strong team, in particular those stepping up from team 2. Despite the loss, we remain top of the table after week 3.

Men’s Second Team (Division 3)

A team of mostly 3rd team players put a very stiff fight for Braid 2nds. The pairings of Adrian Moir/ Pete Thomson, Gilberto Martinez/ Roger Layton, and Eugene Creally/ Nick Woods fought well but ultimately lost 10-2 to Grange Dyvours.

Men’s Third Team (Division 6A)

Braid 3rd team lost 10-2 to a very strong Murrayfield 1st team. Despite the score line many of the matches were close and could have gone either way. The pairings of John Charlton/Mathias Martinez, Pete Traynor/Ross Cobban and Juan Carlos/Matt Giess all performed very well in a very sporting contest.

Men’s Fourth Team (Division 9A)

Braid men’s 4ths lost 8-4 away against Mortonhall 3. Despite the squad being decimated by availability issues, injuries and illness, the pairings of Andy White/ Stevan Alcock, James Paulin/ Callum Thomson and Douglas Foggo/ Carl Argo battled gamely in good conditions.

Week 2 Match Reports:

Women's First Team (Div 1), captain: Suzie Provan

The first team had a really tough match this week against a very strong Thistle. Really high level tennis, which everyone enjoyed. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we succumbed 6-8, but we hold our heads high after giving our best and taking some great players to tight matches. We look forward to trying for the win on the return leg.....

Women's Second Team (Div 2), captain: Janine Frew

This week Braid 2 played The Meadows team away. In the first round Alice and Marianna had a real battle with the 1st couple and were taken to a tie break decider, which they won. This led to a delayed second round of over an hour but despite this the team won 10-4. Well done everyone.

Women's Third Team (Div 3A), captain: Amy Allen

A convincing victory for the 3s with a 12-0 win over Barnton Park 2s last night. Another lovely night for tennis. Thank you to Mhairi Reid who stepped in last minute due to injuries and Cat who made her first league appearance in a while for the club. The first round of matches we went out strong and fast, the second round Barnton Park seemed to be more in their groove and it took patience and consistency to maintain our clean sheet. Well done everyone and thanks for the support! Currently sitting top of the table in Division 3A.

Women's Fourth Team (Div 5B), captain Mhairi Reid

Our match this week was at home against Grange Dyvours 2 who have come down from division 4. We went into the second round just ahead but they managed to turn things around and secure a 6-7 win. Thanks to David and Anne for supporting the team, to Rosemary for a delicious passion fruit sponge and to everyone who played, especially Brenda and Ev Channing who stood in at short notice.

DUNLOP EAST OF SCOTLAND MEN’S LEAGUE 2023 MATCH REPORT (Week 2)

Men’s First Team (Division 2)

The men’s 1st team kept up the momentum into week two of the leagues with another win (11-4) against Hatton at home. The team of Alex Lesiuk, Joe Edmunds, Jimmy Wood, Louis Duthie Gray, Angus Edward, and Tom Johnston converted some tight matches into valuable points, leaving our team top of the table after week two.

Men’s Second Team (Division 3)

The men's 2nd team were away to a strong Thistle 2nd team. Despite an improved performance on the previous week, we lost narrowly (9-7) in a match that could have gone either way. All pairings managed to pick up at least one set, however the performance of the night came from Christian Daly and Stefan Van Walstijn who were undefeated on the night.

Men’s Third Team (Division 6A)

The men’s 3rds battled hard to secure a 7-7 draw at Barnton in their second match. The pairings of John Charlton/ Pete Thomson, Gilberto Martinez/ Roger Layton and Pete Traynor/ Ross Cobban took full advantage of Barnton’s weaker 3rd pairing and could have nicked one of the super-tiebreaks and hence the overall match. Unfortunately, 2 of the 6 ties were marred by unsportsmanlike behaviour and gamesmanship by one individual Barnton player; this matter is now being further investigated.

Men’s Fourth Team (Division 9A)

The men’s 4th team’s match was cancelled due to Barnton Park 5’s withdrawal from the league.

Week 1 Reports:

Women's First Team (Div 1), captain: Suzie Provan

Looking to retain our title, Braid 1sts got off to a flying start with a 12-1 win over newly promoted Hatton. Despite it being a tad chilly, we were pleased to have a dry start to the season, and the odd glimpse of sunshine. We also welcomed two new members to our team - Emily Gates and Eva Vrhunec, and we are delighted to have them with us.

Women's Second Team (Div 2), captain: Janine Frew

Braid 2 played Barnton Park 1st team away on a beautiful but windy evening. We lost 6-8 but it was hard fought match.

Women's Third Team (Div 3A), captain: Amy Allen

A strong team for a strong start to the season. Despite the cold and some long, hard fought matches, especially against their 2nd couple who never gave up, Braid came away with a 12-1 victory to start our season off.

Women's Fourth Team (Div 5B), captain Mhairi Reid

Our first match of the season was at home against Kirkcaldy 2, a strong team which finished one place below us last season. In the first round Viv and Diana raced to a two sets to love victory, closely followed by Anne and Sugantha, while Hazel and Mhairi battled Kirkcaldy’s second couple, coming away with a win in the championship tie break. We had a chance to enjoy some of Viv’s coconut blondie - an energy snack favoured by all true athletes - and we were back on court. Viv and Diana came through again with a win in two sets, Hazel and Mhairi took the first set in a tie break and secured the second, which left Anne and Sugantha on court in a championship tiebreak against Kirkcaldy’s second couple. After some storming ground strokes and decisive volleys, Anne and Sugantha won the championship tie break giving Braid 4 a 12-2 victory. A resounding start to the season and thanks to everyone who played.

DUNLOP EAST OF SCOTLAND MEN’S LEAGUE 2023 MATCH REPORT (Week 1)

Men’s First Team (Division 2)

Braid men’s 1sts started this year’s doubles leagues well with a strong home win over David Lloyd Edinburgh 1s. The team of Alex Lesiuk, Joe Edmunds, Jimmy Wood, Louis Duthie Gray, Angus Edward, and Tom Johnston won all rubbers with a winning set score of 12-2, putting them top of the league after week 1.

Men’s Second Team (Division 3)

The Men’s 2nd team have yet to complete their opening match against Drummond 1. They lost their opening 3 matches with three matches to play.

Men’s Third Team (Division 6A)

Braid men’s 3rd team opened their season with an impressive 11-3 home victory against Merchiston 3. New Braid member Ross Cobban was very assured alongside Pete Traynor, winning all four sets, whilst the pairings of Eugene Creally/ John Charlton and Roger Layton/ Gilberto Martinez proved too strong overall, despite a good showing from Merchiston’s top pairing. The tie was played in a very good spirit in ideal, sunny conditions.

Men’s Fourth Team (Division 9A)

Braid men’s 4th team opened this year’s doubles leagues well with an excellent away win at Dalkeith 3rds. The team of a Juan Carlos Varona, and Nick Wood, Colin Shaw and Jack Flower, Michael Smyth and Callum Thomson won 5 of the 6 matches completed (one match was halted due to bad light with Braid a set up and 5-5 in the second). Overall score 11-1 to Braid. A very promising start to the season.
