Squash

Welcome To the Squash Section of B.L.T.C
A thriving members and day entry club boasting superb playing and social facilities in a stunning location in the heart of Newbridge fields, Bridgend's beautiful park area.
Brief History
Bridgend Tennis & Croquet Club as it was known was established in 1914. In 1978 the club house was severely fire damaged, and a decision was made by the board of directors that on rebuilding the clubhouse, they should incorporate the construction of two squash courts.  The decision was made due to the over subscription of squash courts at the nearby recreation centre, therefore squash became an integral part of the club.
The facility of two squash courts with viewing galleries were constructed and completed in 1978-79 whereas squash began to thrive in the borough. As the squash club progressed several squash teams emerged, the club provided 3 teams in the South Wales leagues with the first team, A side, represented in the South Wales premier league.
Early pioneers of the game in the Bridgend borough boasted the names such as Roy Lewis, John Edwards, Phillip Williams, Don Lewis, Dave Jenkins and Huw Jenkins (unrelated) and later the likes of Tony Evans, Tony Bevan, Nigel Cosby, Martin Williams, John Bryant along with numerous other members. These individuals brought squash to the club and set a president and competitiveness of which still resides in the club today. You’ll also find that the offspring of these players, either played or still play tennis or squash for the club, which just goes to prove that family members actually regenerate the club.
A major player in this era was J.P.R Williams the former Wales and British lion rugby player who was an important figure in the clubs squash and tennis team. He and other members of his extended family are still members of the club to this day.
What is Squash section all about?
Social Nights.
The Club holds several social squash nights where all the teams meet to play each other. Many club members also use Club Nights as an opportunity to widen their network of playing partners.
Many members and guests enjoy playing squash non-competitively, only to retire out onto the clubs terraces to enjoy a drink in the natural surroundings, where there's always a quality game of tennis to watch or simply relax to the rhythm of a bowls match taking place.
If team squash is not your thing, the squash club sees the importance of the social playing member as we run several non-team member social nights. The Friday evening social night is held on both courts from 5pm until late and is open to all levels of players expert to beginner. Come along, and join in and enjoy a refreshing drink in the bar afterwards.
Whatever your levels of fitness, ability or whatever you want out of squash, I'm sure squash section has something to offer you.
Coaching Facility.
When you feel your squash is improving, and you want to progress to the next level, you may consider taking some coaching. Just call the Club on 01656 662041 to ask for more details.
Juniors
The clubs constitution is in the transition of becoming CIC, going forward the club has major plans in attracting juniors into the sport. This includes introducing Periodically Orange Ball and inter school tournaments to give youngsters experience of competitive squash and marking games in a competitive environment.
Remember! If you’re a junior member of the tennis section you are automatically a member of the squash section, this entitles and encourages juniors to play squash. It’s always good to know that if the weather conditions don’t permit a game of tennis, squash is a great substitute for racquet skills and fitness. Please note that all juniors up to the age of  21 years must wear appropriate eye wear, this is obligatory under the squash Wales regulations.
Veterans
You’re never too old to play squash, the club has numerous players over the age of 60 years. You’ll always find Howard and Clive playing they’re usual late Friday night slot at the club, despite being in their retirement years, never ask their age!
The Friday social night also has the likes of Tony Bevan, Graham Bastier and Peter Harwood playing, all over the 60 mark and going strong, and as always, with the excuse of after squash refreshments involved.
May we also take this opportunity to congratulate Tony Bevan on his current squash success, representing Wales over 60’s in the four nations and the English and home counties tournament. Tony is also the current Welsh over sixties champion.
Well done Tony, proof that you’re never too old to play squash.
Team Squash
Currently the club has 4 teams playing in the South Wales squash leagues, all of which are currently top of their leagues, congratulations boys and girls. Going forward the A team is in contention of winning the south Wales west 1 league which should result in their return to the South Wales premiership next season, again well done boys and girls.
With the regeneration of the Bridgend recreation centre, no provision was made to facilitate squash during this development and the squash courts were demolished. The social and team members from the former recreation centre approached B.L.T.C.  to inquire as to the possibility of amalgamating. We’re now glad to say that these players are now an integral part of our club which has bolstered our teams and strengthened our squash section generally.

The Bridgend Squash is pleased to offer upgraded 2 heated squash courts with brand new flooring which was replaced in 2019.
Welcome aboard.
