A Sunny Start to the Season
Last Saturday, 25th April, the annual spring Hurlingham Tournament announced the start of the 2026 season at Bude Tennis Club.
This social, mixed-doubles tournament saw twenty members compete in perfect conditions; sunny with blue skies and no wind to speak of. The organisation was made a lot easier by having equal numbers of men and ladies and it was great to see lots of members new to a Hurlingham participating. Five matches were played which consisted of five games. Members got to play with a different partner each match as the winning lady moved up a court and the winning man down a court.
In joint third place for the ladies were Emma Hope and Stephanie Clark (15 points), second place was Sue Brown (16 points) and the winning lady with 18 points, Val Leafe. In third place for the men was Nigel Tripp (16 points), second place was John Brooks (17 points) and the winning man with 18 points, Adrian Riddock.
Before the presentation of the shield, Val Leafe, the organiser, dedicated the tournament in memory of Jane Milligan, a member who recently passed away suddenly at the age of 59 – she will be greatly missed.
