For the first time in the club's history, Cambourne has won the Grays Cup!
We defeated Fulbourn, Histon and Phennards on the way to the final against Royston. Cambourne were represented in the final by Arif, David, Salil and Steve.
The final itself was an epic triumph. There are two pairs from each club who play two sets against both pairs from the other club, a total of 8 sets.
After the first round of matches we were 3-1 down in sets, and then 4-1 down and losing 4-5 in games and 0-40 in points on the other court. All seemed lost but somehow David and Steve managed to save the 3 championship points and break the Royston serve to get back to 5-5. From there they took the set on a tie-break and won the last set 6-3; meanwhile Arif and Salil put their disappointments behind them to recover and win a vital final set on their court.
So the match finished at 4-4 in sets which meant a championship tie-break (first to 10 points) with one player from each pair being elected by the captain. Arif chose himself and Steve, and in a very high quality tie-break they managed to win 12-10, saving another championship point on the way.
It was a brilliant comeback by the players and Royston were extremely sporting and magnanimous in defeat; obviously it was so close that either team could have won.
Thanks to everyone who came down to support the team and the club!!
