It was derby day at the Cardiff Met Tennis Centre on another busy BUCS Wednesday, with action taking place on all 4 courts.
The Men’s 1s faced cross-city rivals Cardiff University, looking to make it consecutive victories after their resounding win over Bournemouth last week.
The Archers got the first point on the board, with Alex Hyman and Evan Kennedy coming out on top in their doubles match with a 6-2 6-2 win on Court 3. In the other match, last week’s ‘Player of the Week’ Harry Lear and James Mumford lost 6-2 6-2, meaning both sides had a point each after their intriguing doubles contests.
The close nature of the tie continued into the singles matches as James and Harry were defeated by their counterparts in matches where the tension and rivalry were palpable, before Alex and Evan picked up straight sets victories of their own to snatch a 3-3 draw overall.
Men’s 2s also had a derby of their own, coming up against the University of Bristol.
Cardiff Met’s Severnside foes proved too strong as they ran out 6-0 winners overall, although it wasn’t for the want of trying, with some gripping tennis being played throughout the day by both sides.
In the doubles pairings, Joshua Wilkinson and Joe Kenning lost in straight sets, while James Rivers and Will Sherlock were unlucky not to take the second set in a hard fought tiebreak, eventually losing 6-2 7-6 in their match on Court 2.
As for the singles matches, Joshua and Joe were both beaten 1-6 2-6 by their tough opponents, while James and Will also succumbed to straight set defeats, the latter playing out an entertaining encounter, eventually losing 6-4 7-5.
Cardiff Met Tennis are back in BUCS action next Wednesday 9th November.
