Cardiff Met Derby Day as First Teams Travel to Bristol

BUCS Wednesday this week saw Cardiff Met Men’s Third and Fourth teams go head to head on Cyncoed Campus in their league clash. Both Men’s and Women’s First Teams travelled to Bristol in the hope of getting their first wins of the season.

The Third Team, led by captain Ben Phillips, dominated proceedings as they won all doubles and singles rubbers against their Fourth Team teammates. Stand-out performances came from Tom Jenkins and Will Sherlock who beat Will Godwin and Ali Baxter respectively with the loss of just three games collectively.

The Men’s First Team collected their first wins in both singles and doubles this season. Evan Kennedy led the way in quick fashion with a 6-1 6-3 win at the no.2 spot, followed by a 6-4 6-2 win at the no. 1 position by Alex Hyman.

Harry Lear and Will Dunlop showed some true Cardiff Met grit as they fought hard in their doubles after losing the first set. Despite their best efforts, they fell 6-1 6-4. The Kennedy and Hyman partnership secured the 3-3 draw with a convincing 6-1 6-4 victory.

The Women’s First Team went up against an experienced and talented Bristol team. A comeback was needed from the Archers after going 2-0 down following the doubles. Disha Gaba raced to her 6-2 6-3 singles victory, bringing Cardiff Met back in business.

However, Bristol showed their experience by pushing back in front and going on to win the remaining singles.

Captain Chloe Efford and her team will look to bounce back in their next match on Wednesday 2nd November where they will face Cardiff University in the Cardiff Clash.

A special shout-out goes to the supporters who came to cheer on the teams in Bristol. Their support makes the players feel at home even on away days!
