First teams’ Wonderful Wednesday

This week’s report features both 5-1 victories from our men’s and women’s first teams.

The men are coming off a thrilling, yet saddening draw against Exeter’s second team last week, while the women’s team come from a great victory against Cardiff Uni’s 4th team.

Whilst the men are still missing their captain, he was able to play a part in their rubber against Winchester this week as he is edging full fitness. Whereas the women now have a full team after missing their second player, Josie Culliford, due to an elbow injury in their previous fixture.

WOMEN’S

The women didn’t have to travel far this week as they faced Cardiff Met arch-rivals, Cardiff University. This was the second week in a row where our women faced a team from Cardiff Uni, however this time they were up against the 3rd team, a step above their rivals from the previous week. Our team included UTC Amy Wright, captain Chloe Efford, Josie Culliford and Disha Gaba.

Their early morning fixture at the House of Sport started perfectly as both the pairings took confident wins in their doubles matches. As usual, Amy and Disha played together and won 6-3 6-2, and best friends Josie and Chloe won their match 6-1 6-2.

This success carried on into the singles with Amy only dropping one game in her win, Chloe winning 6-1 6-3, and Disha taking another comfortable win 6-0 6-2. Josie lost the first set 6-2 and after fighting her way back into a very tight match, unfortunately just fell short, losing the second set 6-4.

This meant the women took a very well deserved 5-1 win against the team currently sitting right behind them in the league table. Another victory also means the women continue their winning streak of 5 rubbers, only having dropped 2 individual matches in the whole season!

MEN’S

The men faced Winchester’s first team and didn’t have to travel at all as they played their first home game in almost a month! The team chosen this week was very similar to last week’s, however, as our captain, Joel Greatrex, is on the road to recovery from his injury, he decided to play the doubles alongside teammate, Will Dunlop.

Similarly to the women, both pairings got the doubles win quite quickly and comfortably. Alex Hyman and Evan Kennedy won 6-1 6-2, as Joel and Will won their match 6-2 6-0.

James Mundy, first team reserve, was again called upon to play as our fourth player in the singles. James sadly lost 6-1 6-1 against a good player but has been positive in his reflection with help from our Sports Analyst, Will Godwin, and has already come up with some things he can work on to come back stronger after the Christmas break.

The other players, Alex, Evan and Will wasted no time in their victories as none of their matches went over the 1-hour mark. Alex won his match 6-1 6-1, Will won 6-2 6-1, and Evan didn’t drop a game in the whole match!

This 5-1 win not only continues to give the team more and more confidence to progress in the league, but also pushes them up a spot in the table, overtaking Exeter’s 3rd team!

These two victories come at a perfect time for Cardiff Met Tennis, as now comes the Christmas break. It’s now time for the teams to celebrate before going home for Christmas with their families and loved ones. We must now rest, reflect, recover and re-group.

 Merry Christmas everybody!
