History
The club was formed in 1966 when club members used local public and school courts to enjoy their tennis. In 1979 four tennis courts at the Clayfield Copse location were built along with a wooden clubhouse which opened in 1980. In 2009 we received funding from the Tennis Foundation to build a new clubhouse as well as upgrade to 6 floodlit courts, and now the club has some of the best facilities in the local area.
In 2011, we were awarded Tennismark status by Roger Draper, Chief Executive of the LTA. Tennismark is the 'tennis' version of Clubmark, a best practice accreditation scheme for community sports clubs implemented by Sport England in 2006.
Facilities
We have six floodlit porous macadam courts enabling us to enjoy tennis all year round up until 10pm at night.
The two-storey clubhouse, built in 2010, is the heart of our club. It provides a warm viewing area of the courts from the main reception area, a widescreen TV, a kitchen, and changing facilities. On the upper floor there is office space which we are proud to rent to the LTA. There is even a secluded garden area where members can enjoy a bit of quiet contemplation before a match!
Member-run club
The club is run by a committee made up of members who volunteer their time to run the club on behalf of all members. The committee is elected by the members at the Annual General Meeting. Volunteering is a big part of making the club a success, and we are always keen to encourage members to help to continue to build a successful club.
Club ethos
Obviously, one of the prime objectives at the tennis club is to facilitate players in the pursuit of tennis excellence, and we certainly encourage everyone to perform at their highest potential. The important part of competition is to keep challenging ourselves - and other club members - to improve at the game and become a better version of ourselves as tennis players each time we take to the court.
But success is not just about individual achievements. We try to emphasise the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, collaboration and camaraderie. Yes, we often compete as individuals, but we are also part of a collective group and we believe, by fostering a spirit of inclusivity and empathy and mutual respect, we can all benefit greatly from supporting and uplifting one another. That way we can develop a greater appreciation for the sport of tennis and how lucky we are to be a part of it.
What we achieve at the club, we achieve together.
We want Caversham Park Tennis Club to be your 'Happy Place', where you go to unwind, forget the stresses of the day and improve your mental and physical wellbeing.
