TPA PADEL MASTERS

The TPA Masters was held on Saturday at the Guernsey Padel Club and saw the top ranked players of 2022 battling it out to be crowned the Masters Champions.   Events were held across four categories - The Men’s Open featuring the top 16 ranked players of the year, and Ladies’ Open, Men’s Vets and, for the first time, a Ladies’ Vets event, which all featured the top 8 players from the past 12 months.

In the early February sunshine a large number of spectators - may of whom were new to the sport - had come to watch the island’s best players battle it out for the honours.  The first title to be decided was the Ladies’ Vets which saw Chantelle De La Mare & Louise Inder defeat Jo Robinson & Sara Woolland in a close final with some excellent rallies.  Next it was the Men’s Vets category where there was nothing to choose between the pairs in the first set with long rallies and most games going to deuce.  Eventually Pierre Blampied and Ian Robinson prevailed in a tie-break.   The tables turned in the second set with Phil Radford and Dominic Woolland breaking in the first game of the set, before Blampied and Robinson immediately broke back.  However Radford and Woolland quickly regained control and pushed ahead to lead 5-2 when Robinson was forced to retire with a shoulder injury handing the trophy to Radford and Woolland.

In the Open categories, the two Laurens, Barker and Watson-Steele, once again stamped their authority on the ladies game and were just too strong for Chantelle De La Mare & Sara Woolland.   They took their first Masters title 6-0, 6-2.   In the Men’s Open, it was last year’s Champions, Jon Young & Rob West who would retain the title as they beat Omar Kandili and Phil Radford 6-0, 6-2.

The next major tournament to be held at the Club will be the Sheppard’s Estate Agents LTA Regional Tour (Grade 3) event where competitors will be able to gain LTA ranking points.  The event will be held from 18-19th March and entry is currently open via the LTA Competitions website.
