Our History

Founded on 2 May 1885, Cressington Tennis Club is one of Liverpool’s oldest tennis clubs. Remarkably, we have played continuously on the same site at Salisbury Road for over 140 years—a rare legacy in the city.

Historic newspaper archives reveal that by 1887, Cressington was competing in matches against clubs across Liverpool and beyond—a tradition we proudly uphold to this day.

To understand this heritage, it’s worth noting that the modern game of lawn tennis only began in the early 1870s. By 1874, boxed tennis sets, cleverly marketed by manufacturers, helped the sport spread like wildfire—not only across Britain but around the globe.

Locally, tennis first took root in the private gardens of Liverpool’s affluent villa owners, particularly in areas like Cressington Park. That changed in 1880, when members of the Mersey Bowmen Archery Club formed a tennis section. Soon after, new clubs sprung up across Merseyside, including Cressington in 1885.

We began as a grass court club, later transitioning to shale to allow play throughout the year. In 1998, we switched to artificial grass—a surface we still enjoy today.

Most recently, in 2024, we opened a brand-new clubhouse featuring modern changing rooms, a spacious social area, a fully equipped kitchen, and a generous patio where members can relax and watch tennis in comfort.
