Our History

Cressington Tennis Club was formally opened in Salisbury Road on the 2nd May 1885.

Cressington is therefore one of the oldest tennis clubs in Liverpool and also, one of the few clubs in Liverpool to be playing at the same location throughout its 139-year history. Through contemporary newspaper reports, we know the club was playing matches against other clubs in Liverpool and the wider region by 1887, a tradition which continues today.

To put this in context, the modern game of tennis we play today was only developed in the early 1870s. From 1874 the game was quickly popularized by manufacturers of tennis sets who marketed, in one boxed set, all the equipment needed to play the game. Through this clever marketing, the game grew like wildfire not only in the UK but all over the world.

Here in Liverpool, tennis was initially restricted to the gardens of wealthy Liverpool villa owners similar to those that can still be seen in Cressington Park. However, in 1880 a few members of the Mersey Bowmen Archery Club formed a tennis section and in the following years a succession of new tennis clubs formed in the Merseyside area including, Cressington in 1885.

Originally, Cressington was a grass court club, later this changed to shale which could be used throughout the year and in 1998 the playing surface changed to artificial grass which we still use today.

Throughout our history Cressington has been very much a community club, focused on the social game of tennis for the benefit of local residents.
