9U Boys County Cup Regional Finals

9U Report

A brilliant day for the Devon 9U boys county cup team at the 2021 South Area Finals at Bath University.

The boys started the day with a thorough off court and on court warm up to acclimatise to the atmosphere and to steady the nerves that come with a big event like this.

First up for Devon was Hertfordshire. With strong wins at 1 and 2 for Harry R and Weichen we ended the singles all square at 2-2.

Next up was a very strong Kent team with excellent players at every number. Harry R managed to secure our only rubber at number 1 despite valiant efforts from all the Devon boys.

The penultimate county for Devon was Middlesex who again were very strong. In this one Sam T pulled out an epic win in a tie break at No.3 to again leave us 3-1 down going into the doubles.

In our last match against Warwickshire the boys all put in stellar performances to secure a 4-0 win after the singles. With Harry G resting, Harry R, Weichen, Sam and Jacob all got the important wins.

With it all still to play for going into the doubles the boys gave it there absolute all.

An epic battle against Hertfordshire ended 3-3 after the doubles leaving us with a Match Tie break shootout. Harry R and Sam T teamed up to bring home the victory with some fantastic, gritty doubles play.

Kent (the eventual winners) were too strong for both of our pairs in the doubles leaving the end result at 1-5.

Middlesex was next and with the doubles matches being shared the tie finished with Devon being edged out 2-4 overall.

A great days tennis was brought to a close with a strong doubles showing from the Devon boys against Warwickshire. With Weichen resting it fell to Harry R and Sam T as well as Harry G and Jacob to bring home the last 2 doubles to seal a fantastic 6-0 win for Devon.

“I am super proud of all of the boys for all of their efforts in this competition. Their team spirit and camaraderie has been a pleasure to watch and see develop. They were a dream to captain and thoroughly deserved their 3rd place.”
