Schroders Battle of the Brits
What a sensational week for tennis, in particular Warwickshire, with the Battle of the Brits taking place. The event, which was hosted at the National Tennis Centre, was devised by Jamie Murray, running from the 23rd June - 28th June.
The event saw Warwickshire born Dan Evans, British Tennis Number 1, competing in the singles event alongside 7 other players. If that wasn’t enough tennis for Evans he always teamed up with Lloyd Glasspoool, another Warwickshire based player, to form a formidable doubles pairing.
Dan was placed in the Greg Rusedski Group, finishing 1st after winning all his singles rubbers. A full breakdown of the match results can be found attached. Moving through the group stages Dan was drawn against the runner up of the second singles group, The ‘Tim Henman’ Group, and faced Andy Murray in the Semi Finals. This match was an incredible win for Dan after falling a set down to win the match in 3 sets.
Progressing to the final saw Dan take on British Number 2 Kyle Edmunds for Battle of the Brits showdown. Dan took control from the beginning and won the match convincingly to be crowned the tournament winner.
If this wasn’t thrilling enough Dan also made up for the lack of tennis over the past few months by competing in the doubles event too. Placed in the ‘Paul Hutchins’ group he paired up with Lloyd Glasspool and faced a further two matches during the tournament week in the group stages. Dan and Lloyd finished second and made it through to the Semi Finals.
In the Semi Finals Dan and Lloyd competed against James Ward and Kyle Edmund. After a tight first set, which the boys managed to clinch they got the job done in two straight sets. Into the Final the boys went and another showdown with Murray and Skuspki. Having lost in the group stages to this pairing it was a chance for a rematch. Dan and Lloyd had the best start possible with a 0-6 lead against the pairing. It just wasn’t sustainable as Murray and Skuspki dug deep to make a comeback in three sets.
Overall a thrilling week of tennis and a sign of promising things to come for our Warwickshire players. Well done Dan and Llloyd from everyone at Warwickshire LTA, we are very proud of the performances you both put in throughout the event.
