Winners past and present

Haywards Heath Tennis Club has a proud competitive history, and this roll of honour celebrates the players who have shaped it across generations. From long-standing summer singles champions to doubles partnerships, mixed doubles pairings, winter competition winners and handicap event successes, the records bring together decades of club tennis in one place.

The archive stretches back to the 1930s in some events, with more complete annual records developing from the 1960s onwards. It highlights familiar names who have won repeatedly, one-off champions who made their mark, and the partnerships that became part of HHTC’s competitive story. Recent winners sit alongside earlier club figures, showing the continuity of competition, commitment and sporting achievement at Haywards Heath Tennis Club.

Not every year or event has a complete record, and some competitions were not played, but the list remains an important record of club life. It recognises achievement across men’s, ladies’ and mixed events, in both summer and winter formats, and helps preserve the history behind the names on the trophies.

This page is both a celebration of past champions and an invitation to today’s members to add their own names to HHTC’s continuing story.

1981 HHTC ladies singles champion was Clare Wood who went on to become British number 1. Just 12 years later she'd be serving aces against Steffi Graf at Wimbledon.

Born on 8 March 1968 she began playing professionally in 1984 and retired in 1998. Over the course of her career, she reached a career-high singles ranking of world No. 77 in singles (achieved 2 May 1994) and No. 59 in doubles (achieved 21 October 1996).

Wood won one ITF singles title and six in doubles as well as won a WTA doubles title at the 1992 Wellington Classic, having been the runner-up the previous year. At the time of her retirement, she had a 212–223 singles win–loss record with notable wins over Jo Durie and Mary Pierce.
